Job Description

Join us, be part of more.

We’re so much more than an energy company. We’re a family of brands revolutionising how we power the planet. We're energisers. One team of 21,000 colleagues that’s energising a greener, fairer future by creating an energy system that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels, whilst living our powerful commitment to igniting positive change in our communities. Here, you can find more purpose, more passion and more potential. That’s why working here is #MoreThanACareer. We do energy differently – we do it all. We make it, store it, move it, sell it and mend it.

About your team:

At Centrica Energy, our mission is to move it.

We’re energy movers by nature. We’re a global renewable energy trading company which helps move energy from source to use – powering businesses, homes, and societies as they transition to a new sustainable energy future. If the idea of working to create a sustainable energy future also moves you, we may very well be the right place for you.

Centrica Energy has a progressive agenda to play a leading role in the green transformation of our energy systems and achieve net-zero carbon targets. As our business embarks on an ambitious growth strategy, we have an exciting opportunity for a motivated Regulatory Affairs Manager to support our expanding renewable energy PPA, power trading and battery optimisation activities in Germany with a view to expand into other geographies as we further grow the business.

We have a small office in Hamburg but this role can be performed remotely across Germany with regular travel to external meetings and our offices in the UK, Denmark and Belgium.

If the idea of working to create a sustainable energy future also moves you, we may very well be the right place for you. As a Regulatory Affairs Manager, you’ll be responsible for providing timely, succinct policy and regulatory support to the energy trading, origination, asset management and business development teams.

You will lead on developing Centrica Energy’s policy positions on a variety of topics and shaping national and European regulatory changes as we move to a decarbonised energy system over the coming years. The role focuses on the understanding, analysing and interpreting of German electricity market design and trading regulation as well as rules impacting our renewable asset management and optimisation business (for example balancing rules, ancillary services, etc.). You will work closely with team colleagues covering other geographies.

The Regulatory Manager will be expected to:

  • Shape the progression of key deliverables and objectives to support delivery of the business strategy, realise competitive advantage and to protect the business from external risks and costs, avoiding / mitigating brand / reputational damage

  • Monitor the relevant regulatory landscape and communicate this effectively to the commercial and operational teams

  • Pro-actively intervene to change market rules in electricity balancing and wholesale markets

  • Working closely with internal stakeholders to develop, agree and deploy credible external lobbying positions on key issues

  • Develop and agree responses to consultations from Governments, regulators, TSOs and other statutory bodies

  • Ensure the business has visibility of upcoming regulatory changes and support the timely implementation of those changes in a way which maximises commercial value and strategic alignment

  • Engage with internal stakeholders at all levels to ensure that objectives and priorities are aligned at all times and to foster strong, mutually supportive relationships

  • Complete regulatory due diligence for new deals, business cases and operational readiness for market entry

  • Establish and maintain relationships with key external stakeholders including regulatory authorities, system operators, trading venues, service providers and other parties

  • Credibly represent Centrica externally in industry forums, working groups and panels, acting on own initiative to persuade and influence others effectively and negotiating multilateral consensus on key issues

  • Identify regulatory trends to enable the leadership team to take strategic choices.

The Person:

  • A Regulatory expert with high quality strategic, technical, economics or legal qualification(s) and/or relevant energy sector experience

  • An excellent understanding of wholesale energy markets, balancing markets, trading, origination and the energy policy framework

  • Demonstrable track record of advocating with TSOs, exchanges, regulators and governments to deliver regulatory change

  • Effective engagement with senior internal stakeholders on business-critical issues

  • Ability to think and act strategically, identifying regulatory risks and opportunities and managing these effectively

  • Development of innovative and powerful solutions to complex proposals, preferably in a regulatory environment

  • A proven track record in influencing to deliver commercial value, including:

    • Excellent written, verbal, presentation and reasoning skills

    • Ability to build constructive relationships at all levels of an organisation

    • Excellent team-working skills

    • Analytical and conceptual thinking skills

  • Experience of managing conflict, uncertainty and ambiguity

  • Able to work flexibly, across a wide range of high profile and fast-moving commercial and strategic issues

  • Comfortable in working across a matrix organisation and leading or participating in multi skilled teams across different business units in order to deliver the best outcome for Centrica

  • Fluent speaking in English and German.
