Job Description

We are Centrica! We’re so much more than an energy company. We’re a family of brands revolutionising a cleaner, greener future. Working here is #MoreThanACareer - we’re powered by purpose. Together we can make an impact that will truly change tomorrow. Whether you’re developing cutting-edge green tech, helping customers on the front line or simplifying operations behind the scenes.

Your work here isn’t just a job – it’s a mission. We all play a vital role in energising a greener, fairer future.

Lead Electrical Engineer

Exciting opportunity for a talented versatile electrical engineer, with sufficient experience to hit the ground running, but also to grow with the team in capability and responsibility. You will be responsible for scoping out electrical HV/LV designs for integration of distributed generation products, producing initial concept designs for proposals and tenders, then through to detailed design (drawings and specifications), to commissioning support and handover.

Although the work is hybrid working with attendance when required to suitable nearest office in either Windsor or Stockport (1-2 days a week), also the candidate must also be prepared to work around the country when required as site surveys and installation quality checks will be expected.

The Role

You will be a proficient electrical engineer with 5 years+ experience, degree-qualified, or equivalent experience, mainly in HV/LV distribution power systems within the distributed generation and renewables sectors with high technical knowledge of HV/LV connection solutions in terms of providing and integrating designs into existing site electrical infrastructures. You will have a broad set of skills, as outlined below, but also have an appreciation of the commercial aspects of delivering energy generation projects on commercial/industrial sites.

You will be a team player and be expected to collaborate closely with other engineers and teams on most projects. You will have an open approach to sharing knowledge, supporting others as a matter of course and thereby contributing to the continuous growth of technical capability of the whole team. Likewise, you will receive support, as required, from the team. You will be working within the Solar business and so be willing to gain experience in designing different types of solar PV plants.

Technical skills

  • Awareness and understanding of solar PV plant systems.
  • Product selection of ancillary equipment for integration with PV systems.
  • Experience of designing PV plant systems including roof mount, ground mount, car canopy and floating solar systems will be an advantage.
  • Experience of battery energy storage systems (BESS) will be an advantage.
  • Excellent understanding of the various key Power studies (Harmonics, P28, G5/5, Fault Level and Load Flow).
  • Ability to create layouts and outline designs of HV/LV systems for PV plants, at commercial/industrial scale.
  • Ability to further develop outline designs into construction-ready detailed designs, including all drawings, Block Cable Diagrams, cable schedules, calculations, lists of materials and design risk assessments.
  • Excellent in-depth understanding of commercial/industrial LV electrical systems.
  • Excellent knowledge of key Electrical HV/LV British Standards including BS7671 Electrical Wiring Regulations.
  • Ability to design HV/LV connections for the solar plant and specification of the works including transformer and HV/LV switchgear. Design connection solution taking into consideration any site constraints with the electrical network (load flow, harmonics, space restrictions etc) and DNO conditions/limitations.
  • Ability to develop and implement a design solution for installing the required interfaces into the sites existing electrical equipment to cater for a G100 export limiting scheme.
  • LV and HV electrical design is required including metering arrangements and knowledge of electrical equipment (LV switchboards, transformers and HV switchgear).
  • Define the scope of works and interfaces for subcontractor packages.
  • Experience of HV/LV Earthing design will be an advantage.
  • Experience of lightning protection design will be an advantage.
  • At least basic AutoCAD proficiency will be required.
  • You will typically be proficient with a cable sizing software package (e.g., Trimble Amtech or ElectricalOM).
  • Knowledge of digSilent or similar an advantage.
  • Experience of EPLAN will be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of legislation, standards, safe working practice and environmental best practice.
  • Knowledge of control systems for power management (e.g., PLCs, SCADA, BMS, outstations, etc) would also be an advantage.
  • Experience in designing distributed generation and renewable technologies.

Competencies

Specific competencies:

  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of construction and installation project management with a minimum of 5 years’ experience working on projects. Experience working within many other areas of engineering design not just solar PV would be advantageous. Ability to handle solar design software. Knowledge of plant layout, cable design, solar frame design (roof and ground). EPLAN experience advantageous.
  • Attention to detail: Ability to apply a thorough approach to each stage of the design process from concept to detail design.
  • Cross-functional communication: Ability to communicate across all levels and have the ability to converse and collaborate across all internal and external teams of varying technical or commercial bias to enable a successful outcome.
