About your team:
You’ll be working centrally within our mission control room, aka Centrica’s group functions. From Finance and Data Science, to our Wellbeing and People teams - this is the engine of our energy system, where our various Centres of Excellence power up each of our brilliant businesses, ensuring they have all the support, technologies, and capabilities they need to get our customers to Net Zero by 2050.
Job Title: Indirect Tax Compliance and Systems Specialist
Purpose of the Role
The role ensures VAT compliance across complex billing systems, integrates tax processes into operational platforms, and drives improvements in tax reporting and controls. The position combines VAT expertise, systems knowledge, and project management skills to support compliance in a dynamic, regulation-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities
1. VAT Compliance and Systems Integration:
- Ensure VAT compliance across billing platforms, addressing complex indirect tax scenarios specific to energy and other sectors.
- Support the integration of tax processes within operational systems, ensuring accurate VAT reporting and invoice processing.
- Review and analyse VAT returns for accuracy, ensuring compliance with national and international tax regulations.
- Investigate discrepancies in VAT data, resolve issues, and implement corrective actions.
- Develop and maintain VAT policies and procedures for billing systems.
2. Tax Controversy Management:
- Manage and resolve VAT-related Items Under Investigation (IUIs) with internal teams and external advisors.
- Ensure correct VAT treatments, maintain detailed records of IUIs, and ensure prompt resolution.
- Provide supporting documentation for tax audits or inquiries and collaborate with tax authorities as needed.
- Assess potential risks related to VAT disputes and provide advice on mitigating exposure, ensuring that the company's position is defensible and that tax treatments are compliant.
- Work closely with internal stakeholders, such as finance, legal, IT and operational teams, to gather relevant information and evidence required for tax audits or dispute resolutions.
3. Project Management:
- Lead VAT compliance and data analytics projects, coordinating between IT, finance, and tax teams.
- Define project scopes, manage timelines, and deliver tax-related system enhancements.
- Act as a liaison across departments, resolving cross-functional challenges.
4. Data Analysis and Reporting:
- Analyse large datasets, containing millions of line items, to identify trends, discrepancies, and opportunities for process improvement, VAT determinations, reconciliations, VAT accounting, Invoice complaint issues
- Review VAT determination and invoicing data to ensure the accuracy of VAT calculations.
- Develop dashboards and reports to monitor VAT compliance, highlighting key metrics and risks.
- Provide actionable insights through data-driven investigations.
5. Billing Systems Expertise:
- Ensure accurate VAT reporting across billing systems that handle millions of line items, ensuring VAT determination and invoicing align with regulatory requirements.
- Work with developers to validate tax calculations and make system adjustments to maintain compliance.
- Monitor system performance to ensure data integrity and alignment with tax regulations.
6. Controls and Compliance:
- Implement robust VAT controls, including exception reporting and validation checks.
- Ensure systems and processes reflect regulatory updates and business requirements.
- Maintain compliance frameworks and documentation for audits and reviews.
- Monitoring and supporting the operation teams to complete their controls and reviewed by the tax team to confirm if any exception or different type transactions causing issues
7. Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Collaborate with finance, IT, and operational teams to address VAT challenges in billing and reporting.
- Train internal teams on VAT compliance processes and system functionalities.
- Support the Tax Evolution Manager in addressing complex compliance issues.
Key Skills and Attributes
Technical Knowledge:
- Expertise in VAT compliance within complex billing systems handling large volume of data set.
- Strong understanding of VAT regulations and their application in energy and other industries.
- Proven project management skills, with experience delivering tax-related system enhancements.
Data Analytics:
- Proficiency in analysing large datasets and identifying VAT-related issues and trends.
- Strong attention to detail in VAT calculations, determination, and reporting.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Ability to communicate complex tax requirements to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills for cross-functional collaboration.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Taxation, Data Analytics, or a related field.
- Experience in VAT compliance, particularly in industries with complex billing systems.
- Strong technical skills in data analytics and systems integrations.
- Demonstrated experience in managing tax-related projects.
