Together we can make an impact that will truly change tomorrow. Whether you’re developing cutting-edge green tech, helping customers on the front line or simplifying operations behind the scenes.

Your work here isn’t just a job – it’s a mission. We all play a vital role in energising a greener, fairer future.

We’re looking for a Head of Metering Infrastructure to join our team of colleagues in British Gas Energy, that together are setting the standard in energy supply.

In the complicated world of energy, we strive to make energy simple, creating a straightforward and hassle-free experience for our customers.

Our philosophy is success comes when we’re in it together, trusting each other and having fun along the way. And because we’ve got big plans to help our homes and businesses get closer to net zero, we can’t stand still. We need to be always learning, ready to grow and move forward.

We are a small but perfectly formed team that have unending passion and dedication to making British Gas Energy a great place to work, with the right people in the right roles, in an environment where colleagues can maximise their contribution and fulfil their potential.

The Role:

As the Head of Metering Infrastructure, you'll be at the forefront of a revolution in energy. This is a great opportunity to lead the technical performance of our infrastructure and ensure seamless service delivery across millions of smart meters. You’ll work closely with industry-leading partners to maintain and enhance our service levels, drive continuous improvement, and unlock new opportunities to support British Gas’s ambitious goals. Overseeing our extensive smart metering infrastructure, you'll ensure peak performance, drive innovation, and collaborate across Centrica to shape the future of energy.

What you’ll be doing:

Performance Monitoring and Service Level Management:

  • Oversee and assess the performance of the smart metering infrastructure.

  • Maintain service levels and ensure compliance with contractual obligations.

  • Report on technical performance and adherence to standards.

Firmware, Hardware, and Service Management:

  • Manage firmware updates and hardware support.

  • Introduce and manage new services related to smart metering.

  • Ensure effective deployment and monitoring of updates and services.

  • Maintain current firmware, hardware, and services to internal and external standards.

Continuous Improvement and Remedial Actions:

  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Develop and execute remedial action plans to address performance issues.

Technical Support and Triage Management:

  • Coordinate and manage technical and contact centre triage teams.

  • Ensure effective communication between technical teams and customer service.

Asset Reporting, Tracking, and Compliance:

  • Oversee asset reporting and tracking.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Monitor and manage risks associated with the smart metering infrastructure.

Cross-Functional Engagement:

  • Engage with various Centrica divisions to leverage smart meter capabilities.

  • Support business processes related to 'meter to cash', installation, maintenance, and asset management.

  • Collaborate with innovation teams to develop new propositions and services.

  • Utilize smart metering infrastructure to support British Gas's objectives.

Stakeholder Communication and Reporting:

  • Provide regular updates and reports on smart metering performance.

  • Communicate effectively with key stakeholders to ensure transparency and informed decision-making.

You’ll have a track record of:

  • Extensive experience of working in energy or related fields

  • A deep understanding of metering infrastructure, policy, design, and related technologies (Smart DCC, Ofgem, DESNZ)

  • Expertise in large-scale, complex change management and transformation programs

  • Strong grasp of operational delivery, energy policy, and regulatory frameworks

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and government departments.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in business, Engineering, Management, or a related field; Master's degree preferred

Location:

With our Flexible First working arrangements we empower our colleagues to work in a way that best suits them – meaning location doesn’t need to be a barrier. Our metering teams are spread across the country in our regional centres. Our expectation would be regular travel to our Windsor office weekly with some less frequent travel across the country.
