Job Description

We are Centrica! We’re so much more than an energy company. We’re a family of brands revolutionising a cleaner, greener future. Working here is #MoreThanACareer - we’re powered by purpose. Together we can make an impact that will truly change tomorrow. Whether you’re developing cutting-edge green tech, helping customers on the front line or simplifying operations behind the scenes.

Your work here isn’t just a job – it’s a mission. We all play a vital role in energising a greener, fairer future.

We’ve been keeping Britain warm for over 200 years. Today we power 1 in 3 homes in the UK – but supplying energy is just part of what we do.

We’re on a mission to make the UK’s homes greener and more energy efficient. With clever tech like Hive thermostats, heat pumps, solar panels and EV chargers, we’re making it cheaper and easier to reduce your home’s carbon-footprint and with our new PeakSave programme, we’re actively rewarding better energy use too.

Our nationwide team of 6,500 engineers are energy efficiency experts – offering practical ways to make homes more sustainable.

That’s why we need a brilliant Head of Heat Pump System Design to help us get to where we’re going. You’ll bring bags of energy, know-how and passion to our family of door-opening brands, including British Gas and Hive. And you’ll join a team who are just as focused delivering on fantastic results as you are.

Location: With our Flexible First working arrangements we empower our colleagues to work in a way that best suits them – meaning location doesn’t need to be a barrier. This role can be mostly based at home with travel required as needed to attend meetings at our Centrica sites.

In this role you will be responsible for leading and building a department dedicated to the design and implementation of domestic heat pump systems. This role will require a deep understanding of heat pump technology, system design, and project management.

This includes creating a design standard for Centrica, formalising the design process for our Technical Sales engineers, ensuring systems meet performance and efficiency standards, and staying updated on the latest technologies and industry trends.
  • Heat Loss and Flow Temperatures: Understand and apply principles of heat loss and flow temperatures in the design of heat pump systems. This includes conducting heat loss calculations and designing systems to operate efficiently at varying flow temperatures.
  • Mechanical Design: Oversee the mechanical design of heat pump systems, with a focus on maximizing the Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) of the designs. This includes selecting appropriate components, designing efficient system layouts, and optimizing system performance.
  • System Integration: Balance the need for high-performing heat pump designs with the practicalities of integrating these systems into existing heating systems. This includes minimizing the need for changes to existing systems and ensuring new designs are compatible with a variety of existing heating systems.
  • Department Management: Build and lead a team of engineers and designers. This includes hiring, training, and mentoring staff, as well as managing workloads and project timelines.
  • Project Management: Oversee the rollout of heat pump systems. This includes coordinating with other departments, managing resources, and ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Strategic Planning: Work with senior management to develop strategic plans for the department and the company’s heat pump offerings. This includes setting goals, developing budgets, and identifying new business opportunities.
