Overview

British Gas Business is the leading provider of energy to SMEs in the UK, committed to helping our customers manage their energy needs simply, sustainably, and affordably. As we continue to grow, we are looking for a dedicated Compliance Auditor to join our team and play a pivotal role in ensuring our governance framework remains robust and effective.

You will be responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of the BGB governance framework relating to the Commercial function’s demand forecasting, pricing, product development, route to market, financial planning and commodity procurement activities. You will also be involved in the creation, implementation and review of operational controls to manage process, financial, compliance and regulatory risk, working with process owners and wider business stakeholders.

The Role

In this role, you will be at the forefront of driving the adoption of governance frameworks across the business, ensuring ongoing compliance through meticulous monitoring. A key aspect of your responsibilities will involve identifying and mitigating risks by implementing robust financial controls, including those related to costing, pricing, demand forecasting, and hedging. Your expertise will be crucial in working with various teams to influence and guide the direction of IS system changes, ensuring that both process and financial risks are effectively managed.

You will serve as a point of contact for legal, regulatory, and compliance knowledge within the Commercial team and the broader business. This will involve providing support for the Commercial team’s regulatory activities, particularly in responding to industry changes and regulatory demands. Additionally, you will work closely with the Conduct and Governance and Marketing teams to ensure that all Commercial policies, internal and external communications, terms and conditions, and digital content comply with regulations and are communicated effectively.

Another significant aspect of your role will be managing team governance, where you will ensure that the annual plan is clearly defined, regularly reviewed, and that progress against milestones is closely monitored. You will be responsible for addressing any delays or issues, ensuring that the team remains on track to meet its objectives.

This role requires a deep understanding of legal, regulatory, and compliance obligations related to commercial activities, alongside expertise in risk mitigation and financial control implementation.

The Person

We are seeking a highly skilled individual with excellent written and verbal communication abilities, capable of influencing and engaging senior management teams. The role requires the production of complex procedure and policy documentation to a high standard, as well as the management of cross-functional teams to implement new ways of working across multiple business units.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Communication & Engagement: Influence and collaborate with senior management teams, delivering clear and complex documentation.

  • Management & Leadership: Drive new ways of working, managing through others to achieve goals across multiple business units.

  • Organizational Skills: Maintain a high level of organization, manage tight deadlines, multiple deliverables, and large stakeholder groups.

  • Change Management: Lead change delivery, solve problems, and remove barriers to ensure results.

  • Industry Knowledge: Understand commodity markets, particularly in the zero carbon and renewable energy sectors, including associated regulations.

  • Risk Management: Awareness of financial risk management, particularly in relation to pricing and hedging activities.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Power BI, and Power Automate is essential for this role.
