Job Description

Job Title: Platform Engineer

Locations: Ipswich, Cheltenham

Due to the sensitive nature of this role you will be required to have DV (Developed Vetting) level Security Clearance (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/united-kingdom-security-vetting-clearance-levels/national-security-vetting-clearance-levels). An allowance of £5k per annum will be payable monthly while you hold this DV and continue to work in a role that requires that level of security clearance. The terms of this allowance will be made available if you are successful in being recruited into this role.

As a Platform Engineer, you’ll use your technical expertise to design, develop, test, and support the infrastructure and platforms that form the foundations of our vital services.

You’ll work on interesting and challenging real-world customer problems and deliver solutions in an agile manner to time/cost/quality. In doing so, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about a wide range of technologies, hardware, and DevOps practices.

Join a multi-disciplined DevOps team of 15 people, with plenty of experience to learn from. Some are experts in a particular craft; others prefer to broaden their skill sets. However, there is always flexibility and encouragement to work on the tech you’re interested in. You do your best work when you’re passionate about it, and the team is working with nearly 100 different kinds of technology.

You’ll be working fully end-to-end on projects with real world impact. You’ll be able to turn on the news and see that impact. And you’ll have the trust of the customer to guide them to best possible outcome, rather than having your actions dictated to. That means a strong, long-standing relationship of collaboration with a customer and its users relying on your expertise & insight.

What you’ll do:

  • Work to continuously identify, evaluate and onboard new technologies that the overall system could benefit from

  • Work with a range of datasets and platforms including on-prem, cloud or hybrid models.

  • Engage with the customer, suppliers, professional networks and subject matter experts.

  • Be hands on in creating new Cyber Security solutions including:

  • Defining the solution, its architecture and its purpose

  • The design, development, implementation, and testing of the solution.

  • The choice of technologies, frameworks and languages

  • Using a DevOps ways of working to:

  • Work on the core platform infrastructure which support the Cyber Security tools

  • Work on new and existing Cyber Security platform tools and services

  • Work with our datasets to create bespoke solutions to some unique problems.

What you'll bring:

  • Have a passion for technology, and creating solutions, platforms or services that make new things possible.

  • Be self-driven, able to get to grips with innovative technologies and demonstrate independent research and learning.

  • Demonstrate good problem-solving ability able to work through any issues in a logical manner, documenting solutions as required.

  • Have knowledge and experience of one or more of the following:

  • Networking – IP Protocols, Firewalls, Switches, Routing, VPNs

  • Cyber Tools – IDS/IPS, Snort/Suricata

  • Big Data – Hadoop, Spark, Hbase, Kafka, Hive, S3, HDFS

  • Virtualisation – VMWare, ESXi, Docker, Kubernetes

  • Network Data – Netflow/IPFix, DNS, RADIUS, DHCP

  • Infrastructure – Linux, NTP, Check_MK, Grafana, FreeIPA, Prometheus, RDP

  • ETL – Elastic Search, Logstash, Nifi, Splunk, Kibana

  • CI/CD – Puppet, Ansible, Jenkins, Foreman, Artifactory, Bitbucket, Rancher

  • Programming – Python, Scala, REST APIs, Scripting
