Why this job matters
Working as a 3rd Line Support Specialist is critical to the operational teams supporting the Defence customer communications systems. Failure of the tooling platform would hinder the ability of the Enterprise Managed Services (EMS) teams to monitor, manage and restore services to our SLAs damaging the reputation of the BT brand with our customer. The role is for a specialist within a technical team maintaining the BT defence IT tooling platforms which provide the systems to support multiple defence contracts.
You may be required to work onsite 5 days a week in either: Chippenham, Hereford, Hemel Hempstead or Bristol. You will likely have 1 day per week working from home for professional training.
You must be willing to undergo Government Security Clearance to DV level, which requires residence in the UK for a minimum of 10 years. You will go through SC Clearance initially whilst awaiting clearance.

What you’ll be doing
- The purpose of this role is to ensure the virtual computer systems deployed for the tooling platform are monitored and repaired.
- It is vital that the Service and Network management platforms are available to the service and support teams 24/7. This role ensures the underlying computer systems, backups, databases, networks and firewalls, hosting the support applications are always available.
- The post holder will provide support to the design community to ensure timely delivery of new solutions, changes and upgrades.
- The post holder will keep current with the latest technology pertaining to their respective specialist area.
- This role requires technical aptitude, and strong stakeholder skills to be able to engage with customer technology experts, present designs and technical plans, roadmaps and represent BT at external technical forums with the customer.
Skills and Experience
- Expert knowledge or certification in VMWare virtual computing.
- Expert knowledge or certification in Windows Operating system support – including configuration by Group Policy
Expert Knowledge in one of the following technical areas:
- Administration/Support of MS SQL Server Database infrastructures. SQL high availability, load balancing and disaster recovery practices.
- Routing, switching and security protocols and technologies. Diagnosing network faults and actioning network configuration changes - Juniper networks and Palo Alto Firewalls experience desirable
- Expert Knowledge and experience of Commvault Console/ Veam or similar backup and recovery tooling. Storage Policy Management, HPE Storage Management, Tape Backup Management and of Full Disaster Recovery testing and implementation.
