About us

BMT Specialised Ship Design are a prestigious Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering design consultancy providing a broad portfolio of services for advanced and specialised ships and boats, from initial concept through to detailed design and production. The company has an established background in commercial vessels, naval vessels and yachts, with significant experience across all hull types, propulsion systems and structural materials. State of the art technology is utilised to provide innovative design solutions and consultancy services tailored to the individual requirements of owners, operators and shipyards worldwide.

About the role

We are primarily looking for a structural engineer with the ability to work in a team that is developing structural designs from concept to class and beyond. The ability to design with steel and aluminium as part of a specialised structural team is essential.

Working closely with other design disciplines and our clients’ shipyards you will be involved in the structural design effort for a project ensuring that the customer’s requirements are met, and classification approval is achieved. You are likely to have had experience in the design of large complex vessels.

The Engineer – Structure is responsible for providing a skilled contribution to the design and analysis work for assigned projects within the company and maintaining the technical requirements and the standard of deliverables required within the discipline. They will share their knowledge and experience with colleagues across all disciplines, working in close collaboration on a project by project basis. They will actively manage the quality of work produced and complete assigned tasks in a timely and transparent manner.

The role is based mainly from our office in Southampton. Please note that travel to customer sites or to attend exhibitions and events will be required.

About you

You’ll possess strong communication skills and a good understanding of theory as well as practical skills. Additionally, the following requirements should be met:

  • BSc, MSc or degree level qualification in Naval Architecture or other discipline
  • At least 3 years of relevant working experience,
  • The ability to use AutoCad and Rhino.
  • Knowledge and understanding of statutory regulations and Classification and Flag rule sets.
  • Knowledge and experience of ship systems and their impact upon integration.
  • Proven ability to process technical problems and effectively seek out the correct technical solution using sound engineering judgement.
  • Commercial awareness, with the ability to ensure that works are being carried out and completed to an appropriate standard and level of detail, measured against the contracted deliverables and tracked against the agreed budget.
  • The ability to produce clear and well-presented drawings and plans to a suitable quality and standard.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
