About the role

As a Weapons Ordnance Munitions & Explosives (WOME) Safety Engineer you will be passionate about WOME, safety, and providing independent and assured advice. You will support the delivery of WOME projects to schedule, quality and budget, whilst meeting client and corporate expectations. Your knowledge and experience of WOME, safety, and risk management techniques, processes and concepts will allow you to support our clients to understand and comply with relevant UK legislation and all aspects of safety, particularly those from UK MOD policy. Within a military domain (Maritime, Land, Air, Joint), your specific experience of WOME-related hazard management techniques, authoring of safety reports, attending and/or leading safety meetings, platform integration and WOME certification, will help us to support our clients.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic team member, ideally with a UK Defence background in WOME, engineering or system safety. You will be able to demonstrate experience and understanding of the requirements of MOD WOME-related and general Safety Policy and Standards including applicable DSA02 regulations, Def-Stan 00-101, MAP 01-103, DSA 03 OME Part 1 (JSP 520), Def-Stan 00-056 and POSMS.

Office Location & Flexibility

In terms of location, we have offices across the UK and we are happy to explore flexible and hybrid working arrangements. Please note that travel to client sites or to attend meetings will be required. This role is available on a part-time basis. This is because we want the best people for our roles, and we recognise that sometimes those people aren’t available full-time.

What are we looking for?

You would ideally have the following skills and behaviours:

  • UK Defence experience in WOME safety;
  • An understanding of the following:
  • The requirements of MOD WOME-related and general safety policy and standards (DSA02 suite of regulations, Def-Stan 00-101, MAP 01-103, DSA 03 OME Part 1 (JSP 520), Def-Stan 00-056 and the project oriented safety management system (POSMS));
  • The MOD OME acquisition process;
  • The ordnance safety review panel assurance statement process;
  • The ship explosive threat hazard assessment process;
  • The Naval Authority certification process for explosives;
  • Identification, assessment and review of hazards;
    • Supporting and facilitating project safety and environmental panel meetings;
    • Setting up and managing hazard logs;
    • Authoring WOME safety assessment and safety case reports; and
    • Providing WOME justification of the ALARP status and legislation compliance.
  • Experience in the delivery of WOME safety projects to schedule and budget whilst meeting client and company expectations, and mentoring others in doing so;
  • Can author documentation to a high standard to meet BMT’s clients’ needs and ensure all aspects of the work that are undertaken are scoped, described and assured satisfactorily;
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Be a member of (or progressing towards) an appropriate professional body, and be proactive in managing own professional CPD.

Please note, to be considered for this role you must be eligible to hold UK Security Clearance at SC level and will be subject to security checks.
