About the role

The Future Business Development Manager - USA is BMT’s representative in the USA implementing and informing the company’s strategy for growth. Based on the east coast of the USA, this is a critical customer-facing position in BMT which will involve extensive market engagement to understand market opportunities, to promote BMT’s capabilities, to inform the development of new market offerings, and to deliver company growth in the USA.

Reporting to the Future Business Strategy Lead - USA, and working with the North America Regional Business Development team, you will lead the implementation and coordination of BMT’s overarching Future Business Development strategy in the USA to grow and diversify BMT’s business. This role will involve the following principal responsibilities:

· Plan. With the Global and Regional Stakeholders, agree the detailed focus, prioritisation and allocation of BD resources in the USA guided by the overall strategy, as well as key metrics for performance and effectiveness, to position BMT ahead of the market and achieve growth within in a diversified regional portfolio.

· Understand. Engage with the market to identify critical market drivers, sector challenges, customer requirements, key competitors, and business opportunities through direct B2B, B2C and B2G engagement, engagement at relevant exhibitions, conferences and symposia, and through the analysis of open-source and contracted market information.

· Generate. Support BMT sales and marketing teams in prospecting and lead generation, to rapidly convert qualified leads into identified opportunities, grow revenues, and contribute to building exemplary BMT customer relationship management in the USA.

· Collaborate. With BMT stakeholders, identify and foster USA business, academic and industry body relationships that will support BMT’s BD objectives through strategic alliances, joint ventures, or collaborations that increase market access, generate revenue, extend collective capability, translate BMT innovation into operational capability, and promote BMT’s reputation in the USA market for innovation and technical excellence.

· Identify. Work with BMT stakeholders to identify and assess the potential to deliver non-organic growth through the acquisition of companies with market access and capabilities which align with company strategy and will deliver immediate and sustainable growth.

To support these primary objectives, the role will undertake the following supporting functions:

· Promote. Work with Global and Regional sales and marketing to inform, shape and target the effective promotion of BMT in the USA in support of the Future Business BD strategy.

· Manage. Oversee the operation and promote the use of BMT’s leased office facility on the east coast as a focus and hub for company operations, stakeholder, and customer engagement in the region.

· Develop. Work with key BMT stakeholders to inform, prioritise and support the development of new, competitive market offerings that are driven by market analysis, customer intelligence, industry collaboration, and innovation and research.

· Innovate. Work with the Head of Innovation and Research, as well as key stakeholders across the company’s portfolio, identify and assess critical technology trends, their applicability to existing and emerging customer requirements in the USA, and BMT’s capability to compete with equivalent or alternative disruptive technical innovation for competitive advantage.

About you

  • You will possess significant personal drive and commitment to success, and be strongly motivated by company loyalty, competitiveness, intellectual curiosity, and teamwork.

  • You will have significant experience of business development, preferably in a relevant area such as the commercial maritime sector, and you may have an engineering or technical background. You may also have experience in the defence or security sector.

  • You will have excellent communication and presentation skills to negotiate stakeholder access, to explain BMT’s capabilities to a range of external audiences, to build the trust necessary for the fullest exchange of information, to influence decision-making and to enable business collaboration.

  • You will have experience of building effective and durable business networks and be familiar with engaging with senior industry, government, and academic stakeholders.

  • You will have strong business acumen and have demonstrated the ability to identify market trends and couple this with an understanding of emergent, disruptive, technology to translate this into profitable business decisions that result into new products or services which result in business capture in a competitive environment.

  • You will have the ability to establish positive and effective working relationships with peers, junior and senior colleagues across all regions of a global enterprise in order to identify strategic opportunities to develop and deliver growth strategies by matching BMT’s current and future capability and technology offerings to customer needs.

  • You may have experience of federal contracts and be familiar with Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) or the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) .

  • Your career may be underpinned by an academic qualification in business or a research-based discipline
