BMT’s focus SDGs are Climate Action and Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. These goals matter most to our stakeholders and are where we believe we can have the greatest impact towards a better future.
We are seeking individuals who are passionate about addressing these global challenges and are proactive in finding opportunities to integrate sustainable practices as part of their role.
This is a key role in the environmental management and sustainability (EM&S) sector in the Environmental Services Capability at BMT UK. As part of our growth plans, we are looking for an environmental and sustainability consultant to work in the EM&S sector.
You will join a growing EM&S team engaged in consultancy projects in the following areas:
- Defence Environmental Assessments
- Defence projects across Domains
- Support and preparation of Strategic/ Outline Business Cases to help with the Environmental Management and Sustainability Capability
- Environmental Management and Sustainability in wider markets such as other government departments.
The role presents the opportunity to work from time to time with colleagues working in Australia and Canada, on aspects of Environmental Management and Sustainability.
You will play a role in delivering EM&S projects for a range of clients including the defence industry. You will also play a role in enhancing our capabilities in relation to EM&S. This will be done by gathering environmental and project information, drafting sections, carrying out assessments and technical reviews, as well as liaising with the client, the wider BMT team and, where appropriate, regulators and stakeholders.
You will manage and deliver environmental projects to schedule and budget whilst meeting customer and internal expectations.
This role will provide technical leadership for more junior team members and has a high potential for career progression as the team grows.
We have key offices in Bath, Bristol, Fareham, Plymouth, Glasgow, London, Leeds and Aberdeen but are open to flexible working, including the option of remote working, and we can be adaptable on the location of the role too. There will be a requirement to travel to customer sites to attend meetings, and to BMT offices in the UK. We are happy to consider part time or full-time candidates, with hybrid working agreements.
About you
We are looking for enthusiastic, dynamic and flexible team members, who share our values of trust, respect and collaboration. The experience and competencies required for the role are as follows:
- Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree (or equivalent), from a recognised institute or university, preferably in an Environmental Discipline and an MSc or PhD would be beneficial.
- About 3 years’ experience in at least one of the following areas: Environmental Consultancy, Environmental or sustainability disciplines etc.
- Be a member of an appropriate professional body, such as IEMA, and be proactive in managing their own professional CPD, and we can provide support, training, and tailored experience for you to achieve these, if not already held.
- Desirable experience in the understanding of the Maritime (Ships) Domain both commercial and defence.
- Desirable experience in the understanding of the requirements of environmental protection legislation.
- Experience of environmental aspect and impact identification and prioritisation/assessment.
- Experience of authoring environmental management focused documents (e.g. environmental policy, environmental assessment, environmental case reports and legislation compliance.)
- Effective communicator, with a strong ability and enthusiasm to present professionally through verbal and written communication.
- A willingness to undertake further development in line with the role requirements.
- The person must be self-motivated and have a logical and pragmatic approach to problem solving, be flexible and have a genuine enthusiasm to contribute to the growth of a successful business.
- As much of our work is directly customer focused, you must be articulate with professional presentational and written communication skills and be a confident individual able to work as part of a team or act independently as necessary.
In addition to these duties, the post holder may be required to carry out such other duties as may reasonably be required, from time to time, to achieve the above role purpose. We expect you to share our passion for creating a more environmentally and socially sustainable future for all our stakeholders.
You must be eligible to work in the UK to be considered for this role.
