It takes the imagination and passion of all of us—from design and engineering to the manufacturing and marketing of our billions of MedTech products per year—to look at the impossible and find transformative solutions that turn dreams into possibilities.

Job Description

Summary:

The Senior Manager, Mechanical Engineering serves as the North American functional leader for a team of mechanical engineers within BD's Pharmacy Automation Hardware Engineering organization. This role is accountable for building and sustaining a high-performing mechanical engineering team capable of delivering world-class solutions across new product development, sustaining engineering, innovation, reliability, and compliance initiatives.
The successful leader will drive functional excellence by establishing robust engineering practices, developing organizational capability, improving team efficiency, and ensuring consistently high-quality engineering outputs within the mechanical engineering team. This individual will serve as the mechanical engineering functional authority within their organization while partnering closely with delivery leaders to enable successful program execution.
The role requires a strategic leader who can identify capability gaps, implement targeted improvement strategies, develop talent, strengthen engineering rigor, and align the team with the broader Hardware Engineering vision across the Pharmacy Automation portfolio.

Responsibilities:

Functional Leadership & Engineering Excellence

  • Serve as the Mechanical Engineering functional authority and champion engineering excellence across the team.

  • Establish, standardize, and continuously improve mechanical engineering tools, processes, methodologies, and best practices.

  • Drive technical rigor through participation in architecture reviews, design reviews, risk assessments, and problem-solving activities.

  • Ensure consistency in engineering approaches, design quality, documentation, and compliance with applicable quality management system requirements.

  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.

  • Assess the feasibility and soundness of proposed engineering tasks, build a resource plan for completion of these tasks, and track progress.

Organizational Capability Development

  • Assess current and future organizational capabilities needed to support the Pharmacy Automation product portfolio.

  • Identify technical skill gaps, process gaps, and organizational constraints that limit team effectiveness.

  • Develop and execute strategic plans to close capability gaps through hiring, mentoring, training, knowledge sharing, and process improvement initiatives.

  • Build a highly engaged, scalable, and adaptable mechanical engineering organization capable of supporting future business growth.

Talent Development & People Leadership

  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop a team of mechanical engineers across multiple experience levels.

  • Drive performance management, career development planning, succession planning, and employee engagement activities.

  • Create competency development roadmaps aligned with current and future business needs.

  • Foster a learning culture that encourages technical growth, collaboration, innovation, and leadership development.

  • Recruit and retain high-performing engineering talent.

Operational Excellence & Team Effectiveness

  • Improve team productivity, engineering efficiency, and overall quality of work products.

  • Establish metrics that measure functional health, capability growth, engineering quality, and execution effectiveness.

  • Drive disciplined engineering governance and adherence to structured development processes.

  • Promote the use of data-driven decision making, lessons learned, and continuous improvement practices.

  • Ensure effective prioritization and allocation of engineering resources in partnership with delivery leadership.

Global Collaboration & Strategic Alignment

  • Partner with Mechanical Engineering functional leaders across North America and Europe to establish a unified Mechanical Engineering strategy.

  • Drive alignment of mechanical engineering tools, development processes, design methodologies, standards, and best practices across the global organization.

  • Share resources, lessons learned, technical expertise, and organizational best practices to improve overall Hardware Engineering performance.

  • Contribute to the long-term strategic direction of the Pharmacy Automation Hardware Engineering organization.

  • Support the development of a global Mechanical Engineering Center of Excellence model.

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Collaborate closely with Hardware Delivery Leads to ensure the team possesses the capabilities, capacity, and expertise necessary to meet program objectives.

  • Partner with Quality, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Service, Systems Engineering, and Program Management teams to ensure successful product development and lifecycle management.

  • Influence technical direction and decision-making across programs through strong leadership and engineering judgment.

Minimum Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • 7 years related work experience in Mechanical Engineering roles

  • 4 years in functional leadership

  • Experience working with global teams and external development partners.
