Job Description
Job title: Senior Systems Engineer
Location: Portsmouth, Broad Oak. We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role
Salary: £41,000 – £55,000 depending on skills and experience
What you’ll be doing:
- Apply a breadth of knowledge, skills and experience of systems engineering and company approaches, techniques and governance to design and develop solutions and resolve engineering issues and problems for a range of products and engineering situations, compiling technical reports and accompanying presentations as required
- Apply the systems engineering principles of ISO 15288 to the design and build of systems through the entire engineering lifecycle
- Discern, decompose, and model requirements to system and sub-system level and manage these in an approved toolset such as IBM DOORS, Sparx EA
- Undertake system design and modelling to subsystem level including associated external and internal interfaces and manage such models in an approved toolset such as Sparx Enterprise Architect
- May be required to instruct, manage and mentor technical teams
- Maintain a good working knowledge of contemporary systems engineering practices including model-based engineering, digital threads, cyber security and safety procedures
Your skills and experiences:
Essential:
- Understands engineering principles and approaches underpinning design and development activities and be capable of systems thinking, applying holistic approaches to complex problems
- Demonstrates understanding, knowledge and experience of systems engineering including knowledge of appropriate systems engineering standards (e.g. ISO 15288)
- Experience of some aspects of an engineering lifecycle and good knowledge of lifecycle models (e.g. Waterfall, Agile) and associated tools (e.g. JIRA)
- Experience of presenting both technical and non-technical information in a formal setting
Desirable:
- Achieved or working towards achievement of Chartered Engineer status and/or working towards relevant professional accreditation e.g., INCOSE UK CSEP certification
- Knowledge of the defence industry, including geopolitical influences and current UK government strategy
- Have experience of using a high-level design methodology (e.g., UML, NAF, MODAF)
- Experience of requirements management (e.g., IBM DOORS) and configuration management
- Experience with Modelling – Sparx EA

The Asset Management Team – System Engineering:
As a Systems Engineer, you will be joining a growing multi-disciplinary team of Engineers within our Asset Management Team. Asset Management is part of Warship Support, within the wider Maritime Services business. We are currently expanding to meet the demands of developing engineering solutions for the next generation Royal Navy submarines and the current fleet of ships.
Within the Asset Management Team, you will be working across crucial elements of the engineering lifecycle, from requirement gathering to qualification. You will be responsible for eliciting requirements from a range of stakeholders, and then deriving those requirements to the appropriate level for subsystem specification. You will participate in activities supporting the ongoing maturity of the design for a range of marine engineering systems.
This role will provide you with the opportunity to work on a complex engineering programme of national importance, within a supportive team who drive best engineering excellence and best practice. Future career progression opportunities could include the chance to lead packages of work, and/or develop skills in engineering people management and leadership.
