Job title: Product Safety Engineer

Location: Cowes, Great Baddow or Broad Oak. We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

Salary: Up to £62,110 dependent on skills and experience

What you’ll be doing:

  • Demonstrating an understanding of how to assure products are acceptably safe, often from the first principles of safety engineering
  • Supporting across our Products portfolio of Radar, Simulation & Training, Torpedoes, Mine Neutralisers and Autonomous Systems
  • Developing efficient yet effective safety arguments for technically complex products
  • Providing credible advice and guidance to project teams on Product Safety matters, ensuring that safety considerations are an integral part of the design process, taking cognisance of the whole product lifecycle
  • Ensuring project compliance with applicable UK and international legislation and standards in particular, but not limited to, compliance with Def Stan 00-056, DSA02-DMR and other Ministry of Defence procedures
  • Deploying the latest thinking from across industry and academia to support new cutting-edge work on the safety of future product designs, including active work moving into the Model Based Safety Assurance arena
  • Be expected to contribute to the Business’s policy and culture of continuous process improvement, in particular Safety process improvement initiatives

Your skills and experiences:

  • Hold Engineering/Systems/Safety degree or equivalent that supports or is working towards IEng status;
  • Clear understanding of safety engineering & assurance principles and knowledge of relevant safety legislation & standards
  • Experienced and qualified engineers from other disciplines who display the correct behaviours and have an understanding of safety engineering, will actively be considered for this role
  • An understanding of product development and delivery lifecycles

The Torpedo Support Product Safety & Environmental team:

Our Product portfolio consists of a diverse range of highly complex state-of-the-art systems, from the latest Radar technology to underwater warfare assets containing OME products. The team you would become part of develop the arguments, from first principles of safety engineering, to ensure those products are ALARP and remain so through their entire life, compliant with relevant safety policies and standards. As a member of this team, you will be supporting the assurance cases of a product family in one of our sectors, either Radar, Underwater Warfare or Simulation and Training. In addition to assuring the products we develop you may also be responsible for the assurance of the test and support equipment used during the development, servicing and maintenance of them.
