Job title: Principal Technical Author

Location: New Malden, Broad Oak – Portsmouth, Frimley. We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

Salary: Circa £65,000 (depending on skills and experience)

What you’ll be doing:

  • The day-to-day team management and co-ordination of assigned work within the Technical Documentation Team
  • Production and Maintenance of Data Modules (DMs) that provide both descriptive and procedural information within the System Handbooks/Technical Documentation
  • Working with S1000D standard coded data modules
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, including reporting and managing budgets, expectations and workload
  • Act as point of contact with internal/external customers and suppliers with respect to Technical Publications content and associated toolsets
  • Ability to resolve complex problems and issues with regard to Handbook content and related material
  • Grow knowledge and relationship between the engineering development teams and support teams

Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

  • Experience within a Technical Author role with working knowledge of S1000D Standards
  • Ability to write/review clear and concise system/equipment descriptions and maintenance procedures
  • Ability to recognise and manage safety aspects of maintaining a hardware system

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of using tools such as:
    • Common Source Database & Editing tools (CSDB – e.g. EAGLE Publishing System, FrameMaker)
    • IETP production/viewing tools (e.g. trilogiBuild/trilogiView, Adobe Acrobat)
    • Graphic Editing (e.g. Microsoft Visio, Photoshop, PTC IsoDraw)
    • Configuration Management (e.g. SBM or Windchill) & Responsible Document Management (e.g. SharePoint)
    • General Office tools (e.g., MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Management of a small team

The Naval Ships Combat Systems team:

As a Principal Technical Author, you will be responsible for production, maintenance and delivery of the Handbooks/Technical Documentation (TD) material that supports our customer in performing Support/Maintenance activities on the Naval Platforms that use Combat Systems (CS) software/hardware. Produce costings for Investigation/Implementation proposals and produce plans for the work to be undertaken, providing timely reporting. You will support technical investigations or Studies as directed. Communicate effectively within the team and with Project areas in support of the work being done. Maintain good relationships with staff & liaise with Customers in an effective manner.
