Job Title: Principal Engineer – Shock and Dynamics

Location: Filton, Frimley or Weymouth – We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role

Salary: Up to £58,000 dependant on experience

What you’ll be doing:

  • The decomposition of the Dreadnought Whole Boat Shock and EGV requirements (e.g. policies, general technical requirements, etc.) to the combat systems major systems engineers and designers
  • Generating derived requirements for technical specifications to be flown down to suppliers; reviewing tender compliance which is likely to involve supplier interaction in order to manage the delivery expectations with respect to the level of Shock and EGV qualification evidence
  • Working with and reviewing documentation generated by the Combat Systems engineering teams
  • Reviewing, developing and approving supplier submitted physical test plans and procedures
  • Review and acceptance of supplier Shock and EGV qualification evidence encompassing classical manual stress calculations, Finite Element Analysis reports and physical test reports
  • Presentation and delivery of Combat Systems equipment Shock and EGV qualification evidence to the customer

Your skills and experiences:

Essential

  • Experience of structural engineering and analysis techniques specifically classical manual stress calculations and various Finite Element Analysis techniques and interpretations of the output
  • Capable in the use of a mathematical package such as Mathcad, Mathematica, etc.
  • Experience of the development and management of technical requirements and acceptance activities within one of the following areas: submarine, defence, construction, ships or similar environment

Desirable

  • Experience in the design of equipment for submarines/surface ships and/or experience in producing shock qualification evidence (hand calculations, Finite Element Analysis) of equipment for submarines/surface ships
  • Degree or equivalent qualification or experience within a relevant engineering discipline

The Transversal Engineering team:

As a Principal Engineer, you will be carrying out a variety of requirements and acceptance activities relating to the design and development of submarine combat systems. You will be within the Shock and Dynamics team, liaising with a variety of project stakeholders, including engineering teams, suppliers and the Ministry Of Defence.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work across a number of different phases of the product lifecycle, as well as the chance to become involved in other submarine programmes, such as the Submersible Attack Nuclear AUKUS (Australia, United Kingdom, United States) — SSNA programme. We offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
