Job title: Principal Engineer – Computing & IT (IT Systems Infrastructure)

Location: Broad Oak Portsmouth, Filton, Barrow-In-Furness. We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Apply your subject matter expertise and domain experience in delivering IT systems and products to the submarine build and through-life support programmes
  • Work collaboratively to develop and understand the customer and user needs of the product system and how these will influence and impact design activities, technical and operational performance
  • Generate, review, configure and control design documentation to ensure technical solutions are compliant against contractual requirements and regulations
  • Engineering Lifecycle Management (LCM) adherence for all deliverables, Sub Contract Design Reviews and relevant input to project LCM activities
  • Articulate and report the programme status for engineering activities, identifying problem areas and implementing recovery plans
  • Captured and agree input to appropriate Verification Cross-Reference Index (VCRI), Integration, Test, Evaluation and Acceptance Plans (ITEAP) and Qualification Plans
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders such as inter-business teams, MOD & industrial partners

Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

  • Degree level qualification (or equivalent experience) in relevant STEM subject (Engineering/ Physics/ Maths/ Science)
  • Extensive knowledge of computer hardware, HCI (human computer interfaces), infrastructure and network architectures and topologies
  • Strong awareness of Product Safety and SHE and able to reference relevant maritime legislation, industry and defence standards

Desirable:

  • Professional Registered (CEng or CITP) through a recognised engineering institution such as the BCS or IET (or working towards)
  • Good understanding of software applications including virtualisation, orchestration tools, file systems and storage management
  • Knowledge of the complete engineering lifecycle with some experience of operating in a number of phases

The SSNA Ocean Interfaces team:

You will be part of the Ocean Interfaces team within SSNA, contributing to the development of deployable assets for the future attack nuclear submarine. The team tackles global challenges and delivers design solutions by collaborating closely with customers and suppliers. As the AUKUS Submarine programme progresses, SSNA is evolving into a truly global initiative. With designs advancing and orders for long-lead items being placed, this is a pivotal time to make an impact. We offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
