Job title: Principal Design Engineer – Structures & Outfit

Location: Portsmouth Naval Base. We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role

What you’ll be doing:

  • Act as the lead subject matter expert and consultant for all aspects of design solution processes and development, ensuring the highest quality of Design Services products
  • Own, ensure and continually improve best practice for Design Services Structural design activities
  • Lead on the estimation for detailed design solutions and be responsible for the certification, including the assurance of product safety
  • Represent Design Services at MoD requirements and project meetings
  • Liaise and advise both MoD and industry customers, in the development of statements of requirements
  • As required, lead and conduct engineering investigations
  • Act as the design mentor and training manager to Structures & Outfit Senior Design Engineers, Design Engineers, and apprentices
  • Being the Delegated Authority to certify that detailed design solutions meet design intent, conforms to product safety and environmental legislation, and is fit for purpose

Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

  • HND or above in a technology, engineering, or science related discipline
  • Able to discuss and understand context and implication of technical issues across a number of engineering disciplines pertinent to Ship Engineering
  • Possess engineering leadership and judgement
  • Able to forecast risk and subsequently provide effective mitigation
  • Meet the requirements for registration as Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council

Desirable

  • Working within a Maritime Services environment
  • Understanding of the process to support ships in service
  • Effective communication skills both internal and external, at all levels

The Design Services, Structures, and Outfit Team:

The Design Services, Structures & Outfit is a young and exciting workplace with a broad range of experience from Apprentices to Principal Engineers, with approx. 50x engineers in total. We take pride within the team to encourage and fully support development and career progression of our engineers. The team provides Design Solutions across the full fleet of the Royal Navy such as the Flag Ship Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers, Type 45 Destroyers, Type 23 Frigates, MCMV Hunt Class and Submarines.
