What you’ll be doing:
- Leading and chair Authorisation Groups as delegated by the Authorisation Group Chair during the submarine build and commissioning process throughout all phases of the Astute and Dreadnought class submarine build
- Ensuring, through the authorisation of build and commissioning documentation, all build and commissioning activities and operations carried out on the submarine platform systems are conducted safely and are compliant with all relevant statutory legislation, site and safety case requirements
- Evaluating all build and commissioning documentation associated with platform systems to provide assurance to the Chief Engineers that the system design intent has been achieved and proven during submarine build
- Maintaining oversight and support to the Platform and Nuclear Safety Case demonstration by generation of evidence and records to permission significant build and commissioning events
- Working closely with the Area Delivery & Commissioning Managers to ensure the Document Delivery plans are aligned to the delivery and due process timescales and any risks are identified and mitigated
- Providing a point of contact for the Ship’s Staff of the submarine and act as the prime interface for all platform systems issues
- Responsible for championing a robust safety culture and promoting good working practices in all nuclear, environmental, product and personnel safety related activity
- Providing professional advice to support conservative and operational decision-making and assist in technical judgement
Your skills and experiences:
- Nationally recognised higher qualification in engineering subject. (or equivalency through level of qualification plus experience)
- Experience in a technical / engineering lead role
- Detailed understanding of complex mechanical and/or electrical systems
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers/stakeholder
- IEng or ability to attain this status

The Engineering Manager – Authorisation Group team:
As an Engineering Manager – Authorisation Group, you will be accountable to the Reactor Test Group (RTG) Chair for oversight of the submarine platform systems commissioning, operation and maintenance throughout the submarine build at the BAES Maritime Submarines Barrow Nuclear Licenced Site.
A member of the Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate, you will play a key role in the functioning of the Operations and Test and Commissioning Organisation; providing governance of commissioning and maintenance activities and the subsequent operation of the submarine platform systems, ensuring the platform and nuclear Safety Case limits and guidance is adhered to and included within the Test and Commissioning documentation.
