Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Engineer to join us on a contract basis 2 days a week for approx 4-6 months. This role will be Inside IR35 and based at our offices in Alton. Hybrid working can be offered.

This contract role will cover EMC analysis, validation, verification, and mitigation.

Given the prominent nature of EMC on one of our projects, we are looking for an experienced EMC Engineer to pay specific attention to EMC aspects (including Magnetic Cleanliness and Electrostatic Charging) in the design of the S/C, as well as in AIVT planning (including handling, storage and transport)

Responsibilities will include;

  • Undertaking preliminary breakdown of the EMC requirements relating to Electromagnetic Cleanliness Requirements and the Mission Requirement Document down to space segment, spacecraft, subsystem as well as platform and payload equipment level.
  • Creating DC magnetic moment budgets (bottom-up) for all equipment (including instrument contributions), considering the distances to sensitive equipment, clearly showing the achieved levels at all sensor locations
  • Creating a bottom-up AC electric and magnetic field contributors’ analysis, considering at least the major contributors and the distance to sensitive equipment, clearly showing the achieved levels at all sensor locations.
  • Assess and design accordingly the Solar Array w.r.t. its effects on the budgets, specifically addressing change of electric and magnetic properties in case of string, cell, diode failures, as well as temperature effects and contamination.
  • Assess and design accordingly the impact of the booms containing highly magnetically sensitive scientific instruments, w.r.t. hold-down and release mechanisms, synchronization equipment, cabling and shielding etc.
  • Assess and optimise the antenna patterns of instruments and platform equipment’s
  • Assess the Spacecraft/Surface charging environment
  • Identify and propose suitable testing and verification approaches for the requirements, considering available testing facilities and simulation facilities.
  • Prepare preliminary EMC Control and EMC Verification Plans, according to ECSS-E-ST-20C.
