Job title: Chemist

What you’ll be doing:

  • Carry out routine work with no supervision and complex tasks under minimal supervision
  • Working with a team of Chemists on shifts, providing 24/7 Chemistry support
  • Access, have a clear understanding of and apply the Quality and HS&E Management System documentation e.g., Process Instructions
  • Workmanship Standards, Risk Assessments etc. applicable to your particular work scope and to obey all HS&E rules and control measures
  • Provide timely analytical service in support of Submarine Test and Commissioning
  • Provision of chemical doses for treatment of fluid systems to mitigate corrosion, primarily NSRP and related systems
  • Observe health & safety legislation, including COSHH assessments, applicable to working with, handling and disposal of chemicals and radioactive materials
  • Ability to count primary coolant samples via gamma spectroscopy and tritium liquid scintillation in relation to environmental discharges
  • Carry out sampling and analysis on-board submarine as appropriate

Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

  • HNC, degree of equivalent qualification(s) relevant to the role
  • Industry Experience

Desirable:

  • Completion of a Nuclear Chemistry Course

The Chemistry Team:

As a Chemist, you will be working in a Chemistry Laboratory, supporting our Submarine Build and Test & Commissioning functions for the Astute and Dreadnought Class platforms. You will be performing analysis on a wide variety of fluids, gases and materials, whilst maintaining nuclear safety and assurance for the Test and Commissioning function. We’re looking for a competent Chemist experienced in the application of a broad range of chemical analysis techniques suitable for samples generated from submarines during design, build and commissioning, including radiochemistry, and plant facilities across the Barrow site. Reporting to the Senior Chemist (Team Leader) and working within a shift team providing support 24/7. We offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
