Job Description
Job title: Principal Product Safety Engineer
Location: Portsmouth – Broad Oak. We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role
Salary: Up to £60,000 commensurate on skills and experience
What you’ll be doing:
- Lead a small safety team in the conduct of safety assessments and production of safety deliverables to support the development of our autonomy products
- Assist the System Design Authority to ensure the engineering teams work within the prescribed safety management system
- Support the engineering teams in managing system safety requirements in the Model Based Systems Engineering environment / tool
- Provide Safety advice/input on all design and engineering change requests
- Develop the product safety assurance case to support third party certification/classification and product release to market
- Chair project Safety Working Groups and Committees as required
- Provide SME advice on Product Safety to the project, partners, customer and suppliers
- Manage the safety schedule and tasking for the safety team so that all deliverable milestones are met
Your skills and experiences:
Essential:
- Thorough understanding of system safety assessment techniques and associated standards such as Def Stan 00-056 or Mil Std 882E
- Experience in the conduct of system safety assessments such as but not limited to HAZID, HAZAN, FFA, FHA, FTA, ETA, Bowtie
- Experience in producing system safety assurance cases and use of CAE and GSN
- Good understanding of legislation and regulation for products in the maritime environment
Desirable:
- Be qualified to degree level in a related engineering discipline
- Be a registered member of a professional engineering institute and on a path to become a Chartered Engineer
- Experience in functional safety analysis to a standard such as IEC 61508 or 61511
- Good awareness of the developing techniques and approaches for the safety assurance of autonomous systems
- Good understanding of Model Based Systems Engineering and tools
- Good awareness of class society rules for marine craft and platforms

The Design Services, Structures, and Outfit Team:
There has never been a more exciting time to join BAE Systems Maritime Services as we are developing our autonomous products for use in both the surface and sub-surface domain. APAC24, BAE System’s Autonomous RIB used by Navy X, was the first vessel in the UK to achieve Lloyd’s Register approval as an autonomous asset. The autonomy team continues to develop Nautomate, our autonomy system, which is fitted to both surface and sub-surface platforms. This includes Herne, BAE Systems eXtra Large Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (XLAUV) which is currently undergoing sea trials.
We are looking for an experienced System Safety Engineer to support the System Design Authority in our journey to develop the autonomous capability and support our product entry into operational assets. The role will be responsible for the planning and execution of the product safety activities and analysis through the product development lifecycle. The role will also act to provide product safety advice to the wider project team and support the assurance of supplier safety deliverables.
