Job Description

APM Terminals

Environmental Specialist – Laldia Container Terminal, Bangladesh

Reporting line: Project HSE Manager
Location: On-site, Chattogram, Bangladesh
Job level: JL3

At APM Terminals, a global leader in port and terminal operations, we enable global trade and drive sustainable growth. What drives us forward is a mindset of always improving — observing how work happens, identifying what creates value, and removing what gets in the way. We constantly look for smarter, simpler, and safer ways of operating. If you thrive in environments where people value learning and are committed to continuously improve daily operations, join us and be a part of our journey.

What We Can Offer

At APM Terminals, we foster a dynamic learning and training culture that empowers our employees to excel. Our commitment to improvement means every team member has the opportunity to develop their skills and advance their careers by continuously refining how we work. Experience a diverse, multinational workplace where your operational insights directly influence how we work.

  • Play a key environmental and social role in the development and construction of the greenfield Laldia Container Terminal.
  • Work across environmental compliance, contractor management, technical assurance and stakeholder interfaces on a major infrastructure project.
  • Collaborate with project management, engineering, permitting, contractors, consultants and external stakeholders.
  • Build experience across the project lifecycle, with a long-term opportunity to continue within the operational terminal following completion of project activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead environmental and social compliance across project activities, ensuring alignment with the Concession Agreement, approved Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), Environmental Clearance Certificate (ECC), APM Terminals standards and applicable Bangladesh legislation.
  • Implement and maintain the Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) and associated management plans covering areas including air, water, soil, flora and fauna, waste, hazardous materials and relevant social impacts.
  • Oversee environmental and social requirements across contractors and consultants, ensuring ESIA commitments, permit conditions and mitigation measures are translated into contracts, method statements, logistics plans and practical site-level controls.
  • Monitor construction-related environmental and social impacts, including truck and river transport, traffic and community safety, contractor camps, workforce interactions, noise, dust, waste, water quality, habitat protection and interactions with fishermen, small craft and river users.
  • Manage environmental monitoring, assurance and reporting, consolidating verified field data, conducting audits, inspections, Gemba walks and process confirmations, and supporting monthly project reporting and Independent Engineer reviews.
  • Lead environmental emergency preparedness and response, including hazardous-material and spill-response planning, emergency drills, contractor response coordination, availability of appropriate land and water spill-response equipment, incident investigation and post-drill evaluation.
  • Provide technical environmental assurance across project design and execution, including climate adaptation requirements, waste-stream management, IMDG requirements and proactive identification and management of environmental and social risks.

What We Are Looking For

  • Continuous improvement mindset: we are looking for someone who brings a thoughtful improvement mindset—curious about how work gets done and motivated to make meaningful, sustainable improvements over time.
  • Experience: Minimum 8 years of professional experience, with a focus on environmental management within large-scale infrastructure, ports or heavy industrial construction.
  • Technical background: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science or a closely relevant discipline, with advanced understanding of areas such as water and air-quality monitoring, soil sampling and hazardous-material storage.
  • Standards and regulatory expertise: Proven experience working with environmental and social requirements, preferably including IFC Performance Standards and World Bank Group EHS Guidelines, together with strong familiarity with Bangladesh environmental regulations and Department of Environment permitting processes.
  • Major-project experience: Experience in a similar role on at least two large-scale projects valued above USD 100 million. ISO 14001:2015 Lead Auditor qualification is highly desirable, while NEBOSH IGC or an equivalent environmental certification such as IEMA is preferred.
  • Communication: Proficiency in both English and Bengali is required to work effectively with international and local stakeholders.
