Airbus Defence & Space is working on a new satellite based communication system. The constellation of satellites will offer connectivity to the customer, allowing connecting elements through satellite RF and optical links.

The system consists of the space segment (two geostationary satellites) and the ground segment. The Ground Segment is composed by a part which allows the overall TC/TM exchange with the satellite, and a part which allows the monitoring and control of the Payload.

In order to actively monitor and control the Mission configuration for the communication chain a set of new tools is under development at Airbus DS.

Such tool will allow actively managing antenna parameters as well as payload and ground channels connectivity settings in order to reach the needed coverage and performances.

Task Description:

As a Mission Management Lead Engineer, you are responsible for the design, development, integration and validation of the System which will allow the Mission Management.

The System will be partly developed internally within the team and will be partly subcontracted to internal and external Subcontractors. The application to be developed consists of a set of SW Modules which allow the simulation, commanding ad monitoring of a cutting-edge Payload, as well as the overall traffic configuration. You will be in charge of contributing to the definition of overall System and Software requirements as well as performing general System Design, Mission IVV, Software Architecture tasks.

Your range of tasks will cover the entire System / Software Development lifecycle, from Requirements definition, System and Software Design and IVV. Your activities will be performed in close cooperation with the System Engineers, the SW Architect, the SW developers and the sub-contractors.

The holder of this position will be located at Ottobrunn and reports to the Project Chief Engineer.

Your tasks:

  • Analyse customer requirements and lead the definition of the adequate System and Software Architecture, ensuring robustness and compatibility with the already existing software modules.
  • Define System Design, with particular focus on the Payload and Traffic Models and their inclusion in the Software Architecture.
  • Perform coordination of the subcontractors, with particular focus on the System Design phase.
  • Lead overall System and Subsystem Level Requirements definition process and related flow down into Software requirements.
  • Coordinate analysis on Software non-conformances, discrepancies and waivers
  • Analyse data from validation tests to determine whether systems and processes meet required criteria and specifications


Skills required

Background and experience:

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electronics, Aerospace or other related Engineering
  • Technical leadership experience in in the frame of SATCOM systems or related field
  • Experience on Satellite-based telecommunication systems (GEO, LEO connectivity)
  • Experience in System Design with focus on GEO / LEO Mission Management topics (i.e. SCC, PCC concepts)
  • Experience with Space and Ground Segment Architecture and development principles
  • Experience with System and Software Development and IVV process (e.g. Review Milestones, IT Integration processes)
  • Knowledge of Software Design and Architecture principles is a plus
  • Knowledge of modern Systems Engineering techniques and tools (MBSE, DOORS, EA, CAMEO) is a plus
  • Knowledge of IT Virtualization and Containerization techniques is a plus
  • Knowledge of AGILE Development Lifecycle (Kanban, SCRUM) is a plus
  • Knowledge of modern SW V&V DevOps strategies is a plus
  • Experience with ECSS-40C process is a plus
  • Ability to operate and efficiently communicate in a multi-national team organisation
  • Language skills: English fluent, German language skills are advantageous
