Job Description

Job Description:

In order to support Database Architecture and Roadmap department, Airbus Defence and Space is looking for a Database Architect (d/f/m).

The department is a transnational department with Database Architects on the Toulouse, Immenstaad, and Stevenage sites that offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic, transnational team of experts at the core of the Avionics engineering process. While the Database Architect of a given project is usually working on the project’s main site, it is also possible to contribute to projects running on other sites in other countries, either remotely from the home site, or via time-limited or indefinite move.

Avionics Systems within Airbus Space Systems is responsible for architecting, developing, and validating the functional design of space vehicles. This encompasses the definition of the Operational Concept of a space vehicle, the development of the On-board Software, Attitude, and Orbit Control System, numerical and hardware-in-the-loop simulators, Failure Detection, Isolation, and Recovery approach, plus the validation and verification of the Avionics substem.

At the heart of the Avionics subsystem development process lies the Systems Engineering Database (SEDB) that acts as a central hub of engineering data, providing a single source of truth for the major part of the Avionics design. From this central data repository, the On-Board Software is configured, simulators are derived, and the on-ground reference for all Telecommands, On-Board Parameters, and Packets is provided. As such, the SEDB also takes a critical role for the delivery towards internal and external customers.

Your tasks and responsibilities

In this central role within the Avionics development process, you will be responsible for the architecture, population, validation, delivery, and management of the Systems Engineering Database (SEDB) within one or several projects. More specifically:

  • Definition of the architecture of the SEDB: Tailoring of architecture to project needs based on the framework of the employed product, or based on heritage. This involves selection and tailoring of interfaces, data formats, and DB topology.
  • Population of database via data import functions, manual entry, or scripting.
  • Support to other functions (AOCS, SW, OPS, FDIR, AIT, ...) on data population and validation
  • Ensuring consistency (in itself and towards the agreed baseline) of the overall database content and performing of validation
  • Interface with and delivery of the database towards internal (AIT) and external (ESA, governments, private) customers
  • Project management of the SEDB work package in terms of schedule, cost, risk, plus management of changes, and issues.
  • Team management of the DB team and/or subcontracted work packages in case of larger projects
  • Contribution to transnational harmonization and optimization of the database engineering process, especially concerning validation of the upcoming new database tooling.

Desired skills and qualifications

  • Completed studies in Aerospace Engineering, Software Engineering, or a similar field
  • Basic knowledge of the satellite development and validation process
  • Experience in data management and organization
  • Experience with versioning systems (SVN, Git, ...)
  • Average programming skills with Java, C++, or a similar object-oriented language
  • Familiarity with software engineering approaches, processes and tools (e.g. Jira)
  • Basic knowledge of project management principles
  • Experience with space vehicle development in a functional field (OBSW, FVI, OPS, FDIR, AOCS, FV) is an asset
  • Good communication skills
  • Pro-active mindset with the capability to anticipate needs and the willingness to assist
  • Capability to dissect a complex problem into manageable parts, and to ensure its solution in an autonomous way
  • Capability for abstraction of problems
  • Capability to deal with uncertainty
  • Capability to separate important from unimportant tasks
  • Ability to self-organize and to structure own work
  • Enjoyment of working in a transnational, multi-disciplinary team
