We at Airbus Central Research & Technology work on cutting edge technologies for future airborne and spaceborne systems, providing novel functionalities whilst reducing the environmental footprint of Airbus products and services. You will join the team of researchers actively driving optical communications for aeronautic and space systems in Filton, UK. You will make an impact on Airbus by cooperatively performing advanced research on optical communication and power beaming systems for our flying platforms. We collaborate with key players in the UK as well as the rest of Europe and the US.

What you will be doing:

The department "Communication Technologies" within Airbus Central Research and Technology is working on advanced solutions for optical airborne connectivity and wireless power beaming.

In this frame, you will work on the design of 3d printed and CNC'ed parts for prototype systems as well as code and test software, integrate hardware and assist with live trials in the lab and field test outdoors. You will assist team members in their daily tasks and have the opportunity to learn on the job about various scientific aspects of optics and radio-frequency systems.

Requirements:

Our placements are open to Undergraduates only. Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application.

Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Studying towards an Engineering degree (preferable in Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical, Radio Frequency), or equivalent;

  • Mechanical design skills and use of programs and techniques (ie. Autodesk, FreeCad);

  • Knowledge on control theory and programming experience with microcontrollers (ie: Raspberry Pi, Arduino, etc.);

  • You are a good team player, have excellent communication skills, and are able to work independently.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: Eligibility to gain UK SC Security Clearance OR You will be subject to a BPSS check (including a criminal record check).
