Aerovel, a trailblazer in the unmanned aircraft industry, is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our hands-on design team responsible for the creation of highly optimized unmanned aircraft system (UAS) components, assemblies, and ground support equipment, in pursuit of improved features, increased performance, reduced mass, size and drag, improving reliability, manufacturability and serviceability.

Meet the Team:

The Airbus Helicopters Flexrotor Program offers one of the most sophisticated small tactical unmanned aerial systems (STUAS) with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL). It can be used day or night by US and allied forces for a diverse range of intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) on land and at sea.

Your Challenges:

  • Responsible for full-lifecycle of design from concept, through development and test, manufacture and field support, across a wide-range of subject matter.

  • Perform detailed mechanical engineering design and analysis of components and systems, achieving target product performance.

  • Researches the application, gathers requirements, sets targets, conceptualizes design, performs trade study, creates project schedule, performs design and test, provides design and project reviews.

  • Designs mechanical components and assemblies using SolidWorks CAD, produces high quality 3D CAD, engineering drawings, Bill Of Materials, and critical to quality process and inspection steps.

  • Perform detailed mass and power consumption accounting, tolerance stack analyses, identification of critical to quality characteristics, and verification with actual parts in prototype and first article.

  • Design scope includes but not limited to machined components, composite structures, rotating assemblies, power train, motorized actuators and surfaces, harnesses, vibration isolation, thermal management, electro-mechanical interface, transport cases, functional test equipment, field tools and equipment.

  • Interacts with, learns from, and supports suppliers in development of manufacturable products, and resolution of manufacturing issues.

  • Performs hands-on prototype, fabrication, instrumentation, and test work when needed.

  • Resolve manufacturing issues such as first pass yield, review of discrepant material, tooling or process issues.

  • Troubleshoot and perform root cause analysis for issues discovered in development, production flight testing, and fleet issues in the field, develop corrective action.

  • Contribute to technical reports or other documentation, such as handbooks or bulletins, for use by engineering staff, management, or customers.

Your Boarding Pass:

  • Bachelors of Science degree or greater in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, or equivalent.

  • 10 years of relevant experience in Engineering.

  • Knowledge and ability sufficient to evaluate interface and packaging for fundamental electrical systems: power, data, vibration/acceleration, and thermal management.

  • Detail-oriented mechanical design analysis.

  • High quality CAD, Engineering Drawings, and Configuration Management workmanship

  • Knowledgeable and experienced in a standardized development process.

  • Experience designing parts to production and sustaining.

  • Low volume series manufacturing techniques.

  • Avionics architecture and system integration.

  • Structural Systems Integration (aircraft interfaces).

  • Electrical Wiring Diagram and wire-routing requirements understanding.

Physical Requirements:

  • Onsite: 100% - Daily except when on travel.

  • Vision: able to see and read computer screen and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents, reports and engineering drawings daily

  • Hearing: able to hear to participate in conversations in person and via teleconference or phone and to hear sounds including safety warnings or alarms daily

  • Speaking: able to speak in conversations and meetings, deliver information and participate in communications daily

  • Equipment Operation: able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment daily

  • Carrying: able to carry documents, drawings, electronic equipment up to 10lbs daily

  • Lifting: able to lift documents, drawings, electronic equipment up to 10lbs daily

  • Pushing / Pulling: able to push and pull small office furniture occasionally

  • Sitting: able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on computer daily

  • Squatting / Kneeling: able to squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items stored on low shelving occasionally

  • Standing: able to stand for discussions in offices daily

  • Travel: able to travel independently and at short notice rarely

  • Walking: able to walk through office and production areas including uneven surfaces daily

  • Personal Protective Equipment required: Steel-toed shoes are required for all shop floor visits, appropriate hearing/eye protection may also be required when visiting the shop floor.

Ability to work in the US without current, or future, need for visa sponsorship/work authorization is required for this opportunity.

Summary pay range: $114,480 - $130,380 per year.
