Approach to inclusion

Equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is at the heart of everything BSR does; this commitment is shared by staff, committee members, working groups, and trustees. This commitment allows us to champion EDI in all aspects of rheumatology. Our core values of leadership, openness, collaboration and celebrating success reinforce our commitment to EDI.

Within BSR, our internal EDI workstreams are focussed on creating a culture of belonging. Belonging is not the same as ‘fitting in’. We’re not looking for colleagues who ‘fit’, as this implies that there is a right way to present at work. Instead, belonging focusses on creating an organisation where everyone is able to act with integrity and in line with our values. We aim to create a culture of psychological safety, so that all colleagues feel respected and trusted.

Flexible working at British Society for Rheumatology

We’re a small organisation with huge ambitions. If you’re looking for an organisation with a one-team feel where you’ll be able to develop professionally and have the autonomy to run with your ideas, we might be a match for you.

Our fulltime working week is 31.5 hours, spread over 5 days. We offer a lot of flexibility around this, so you’re not tied to a 9am-5pm day. This could look like a 4.5-day week, however, you can also tailor your working hours to suit your individual needs and responsibilities.

Nearly all of our roles are hybrid and we use our office for activities focussed on collaboration and communication. At BSR, this means that we all come into the office once a month for an all-staff day, giving us chance to learn and work together as a team, and take part in fun activities organised by our Social Squad. The rest of the time we make decisions within our own teams about how often it is productive to come into the office. All of this means that our hybrid workplace has a real buzz on the all-staff days, and then there are also quieter days where only a few people or teams might have chosen to work from the office. To support our hybrid working approach, we have a focus on digital wellbeing and productivity, with the aim of creating a workplace where everyone thrives.

Working Environment

The flexibility and the team spirit of most colleagues; mostly everyone is always ready to offer a helping hand. There is an openness and genuine kindness from everyone. I think we can also continue to explore how people may do tasks differently depending on how their brains are set up, or any protected characteristics, and which tasks may be more difficult for certain individuals, mainly to enhance people's knowledge when it comes to diversity; this can also build more empathy and consideration for people, interpersonal skills, and improve inclusivity further.
