Job Description

About the role

At BT, our strategy is how we respond to our customers, outpace competitors, and adapt to a fast-changing world. Strategy & Change is where that happens. We set BT’s direction and work with every part of the business to make it real. Our teams cover the full journey – from shaping the big picture, to making change happen on the ground, to creating what comes next.

Within Strategy & Change, the Group Strategy & Insight team works across the whole business to create a set of integrated strategies and plans, based on deep insight from customers, markets and competitors to drive long-term value creation. As part of the Group Strategy & Insight team, the Commercial Strategy team has a critical role to play on investments in cutting-edge 5G and FTTP technologies. Our team articulates the impact of strategic decisions and commercial opportunities on different customer facing units (CFUs) and manages trade-offs to ensure our investments deliver BT’s strategic priorities. We have wide ranging exposure across BT and our work feeds directly into strategic and investment decisions within BT and informs decision making at the highest level.

Our work shapes some of the most complex and consequential decisions BT makes. This role is accountable for shaping and driving commercially significant decisions (e.g. investment, pricing, portfolio strategy) at a pan-BT level. You will combine rigorous analysis with judgement to land clear, executive-ready recommendations – and retain accountability for the commercial outcomes of decisions as they move into execution. Success in this role is about having the right answer and bringing people with you. You will work with senior leaders across BT who hold different incentives, pressures and perspectives and impact will come from your ability to listen, build trust, frame trade‑offs clearly, and create shared ownership of decisions.

What you’ll be doing

As a Senior Strategy Manager, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of BT by leading strategic problem solving and delivering bold strategic and commercial recommendations:

  • Lead end-to-end development of commercial recommendations from problem framing through to executive decision and implementation alignment
  • Own commercial models and business cases including assumptions, sensitivities and implications
  • Make clear, actionable recommendations under uncertainty, rather than deferring to further analysis
  • Translate complex analysis into clear, decision-ready messages for senior stakeholders
  • Shape and land decisions across CFUs, managing trade-offs and conflicting incentives
  • Retain accountability for the commercial outcomes of decisions, including tracking whether expected value is realised and adapting recommendations where required

This is a role for someone who combines strong strategic and analytical capabilities with emotional intelligence, curiosity about people, and confidence operating through influence. This role is focused on defining strategic and commercial decisions, rather than leading large-scale delivery programmes.

Essential Skills / Experience

Experience in telecoms, technology, media, or other regulated, capital-intensive industries is preferred. Candidates without this must demonstrate an understanding of how market structure, regulation and capital intensity shape commercial outcomes.

  • Demonstrated ownership of commercially significant decisions (e.g. pricing, investment, capital allocation), including accountability for recommendations that were implemented and delivered measurable impact
  • Clear evidence of personal ownership (not team or workstream contribution) of decisions and models, including being the individual accountable for the recommendation presented to decision-makers
  • Experience forming clear recommendations in situations with ambiguous or imperfect data, demonstrating strong commercial judgement to take a clear position rather than presenting multiple options without a preferred path
  • Ability to consistently synthesise complex problems into concise, executive-ready narratives with clear “so what” and recommended actions
  • Track record of influencing and landing decisions with senior stakeholders across units, particularly where incentives and priorities are misaligned
  • Experience using judgement to balance evidence, risk and uncertainty to form clear and actionable recommendations without defaulting to analysis alone

Desirable Skills / Experience

Skills

  • Background in strategy roles (in-house or consulting), with consulting candidates required to demonstrate clear ownership of decisions and outcomes beyond advisory recommendations
  • High emotional intelligence, including the ability to listen, challenge constructively and navigate disagreement
  • Adaptive communication style, tailoring content and approach to different audiences and forums
  • Collaborative team player, committed to building collective ownership and contributing to a high performing, supportive team culture

Experience

  • Leading pricing or investment decisions with P&L impact
  • Owning business cases for capital allocation or portfolio strategy
  • Influencing commercial outcomes in complex environments
  • Translating customer, market and financial insights into clear strategic decisions

Our Package

• 15% on target annual bonus
• Private Healthcare for self & family
• Company car or £5,500 cash alternative
