Job Description

Senior Front‑end Developer

Shape digital experiences that improve the way the world works

At Mott MacDonald, we believe the best outcomes are created when brilliant people are trusted, supported, and empowered to do meaningful work. As a proudly employee‑owned, global engineering and development consultancy, we use technology, creativity, and collaboration to improve society—now and for future generations.

We’re looking for a Senior Front‑end Developer to join our Platform Services team in Auckland and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our Moata Platform—a globally used digital platform that supports our largest clients and most impactful infrastructure projects around the world.

This is more than a technical role. It’s an opportunity to lead with purpose, grow others, and build high‑quality digital experiences that enable better decision‑making at scale.

Your impact

As a Senior Front‑end Developer, you will lead, mentor, and collaborate within a diverse, high‑performing global team responsible for developing and maintaining shared UI frameworks and UI packages across the Moata Platform. Your work will enable teams across our business to deliver consistent, accessible, and high‑quality applications—supporting infrastructure, communities, and clients worldwide.

You’ll balance hands‑on technical leadership with strategic thinking, helping to shape how we build, scale, and evolve our front‑end capability while fostering a culture of learning, trust, and inclusion

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead with collaboration – Partner closely with product owners, stakeholders, and regional technical leads to ensure consistency, quality, and excellence across platform applications.
  • Build for scale and quality – Oversee the planning, design, development, and ongoing improvement of front‑end applications, shared UI components, and developer tooling.
  • Grow people and capability – Mentor and support developers, contributing to their technical growth, confidence, and career progression while promoting best‑practice engineering standards.
  • Think strategically, act practically – Lead estimation and risk assessment, contribute to architectural decisions, and dive into complex development challenges when needed.
  • Champion continuous improvement – Help evolve our ways of working, tooling, and standards to support reliable, secure, and maintainable solutions.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for someone who combines strong commercial experience with a genuine passion for technology, people, and quality. You’ll be detail‑oriented, values‑driven, and motivated by creating solutions that make a real difference.

You’ll have experience with:

  • JavaScript and TypeScript
  • React and Redux
  • Testing frameworks
  • SCSS
  • RESTful APIs
  • UX/UI principles, accessibility, cross‑browser compatibility, and modern web standards

Ideally, you’ll also bring experience in:

  • CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
  • Security management and performance optimisation
  • Caching strategies and cloud technologies
  • Creating and managing NPM packages
  • Agile delivery environments
  • Integration testing
  • Contributing to front‑end architecture and design (e.g. micro‑frontends, design patterns, scalability, automation)

Leadership experience—whether formal or informal—along with a passion for mentoring others, will be key to success in this role.

Why join Mott MacDonald?

  • Purpose‑driven work – Contribute to digital solutions that support infrastructure, resilience, and positive societal outcomes globally.
  • Growth and development – With employee ownership at our core, your development matters. You’ll be supported to grow your technical expertise and leadership capability.
  • Inclusive and collaborative culture – We celebrate diversity, value different perspectives, and succeed together through trust, fairness, and integrity.
  • Wellbeing first – We recognise the whole person, not just the professional, and prioritise balance, flexibility, and care for one another.
  • Global opportunity, local connection – Be based in Auckland while collaborating with talented colleagues around the world.

Make your mark

This role offers a unique opportunity to leave a lasting impact—on our platform, our people, and the communities our work serves. If you’re excited by the idea of building meaningful technology, supporting others to thrive, and shaping the future of digital infrastructure, we’d love to hear from you.

Come be brilliant with us.

Employee ownership

  • Our employee ownership model means no external investors, just us, creating a culture of shared success.
  • Our employees have a stake and a voice in our business, giving them a direct connection to our success through our personal and group performance bonuses.
  • As your career grows, so does your stake, recognising your long-term impact and contribution.
  • Your voice matters, with the opportunity to connect directly with senior leadership through formal channels to help shape our future.

Our benefits package is designed to enhance your experience:

• A flexible and agile work atmosphere that caters to your professional journey and life's special moments
• A competitive salary complemented by Discretionary Group and Personal Performance Bonuses for eligible employees
• Comprehensive coverage including life, personal accident, and salary continuance insurance, providing peace of mind during uncertain times
• Opportunities to enhance your work-life balance through the option to purchase extra annual leave
