Job Description:
A Senior Regulatory Affairs Scientist in Mars Pet Nutrition provides regulatory guidance in a rapid changing environment to support strategic and innovative Mars business priorities. This fast paced and exciting position has exposure to many parts of the business and works cross-functionally with the eCommerce team, Legal, Research & Development, Marketing, Commercial and Supply Teams. The Senior Regulatory Affairs Scientist will utilize knowledge of federal and state regulations to ensure compliance and substantiation of Mars product labeling with a strong emphasis in product claims and eCommerce advertising. The position will support Mars Petcare trade objectives, industry trade association activities and represent the company in interactions with external government and non-governmental organizations.
What are we looking for?
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree preferably in a Science, Nutrition or equivalent
3+ years of regulatory experience or experience in an FDA business is highly desired
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to identify and overcome barriers to deliver guidance to R&D and commercial partners
Strong analytical thinking skills and the ability to interpret complex regulations into creative business application.
Strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to actively develop and maintain strong collaborative working relationships with Regulatory colleagues around the world and with partners in other functions including Product Development, Legal, Quality & Food Safety, Marketing, Commercial, Formulation and others.
Strong written and verbal communication skills are required in order to clearly communicate potentially complex or sensitive information in a factual, non-speculative manner, across levels and functions in the organization.
Excellent project management skills, with the ability to identify what needs to be done and the ownership to drive the work to completion.
Excellent attention to detail is required for many aspects of this role including interpreting and applying regulations, label development etc.
Up to 10% travel required
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree in a science related technical field
Experience with sustainability claims support as it relates to ingredients and packaging
What will be your key responsibilities?
Regulatory Compliance
Provide regulatory review and approval of packaging and advertising materials for pet food and ensuring appropriate support for all claims. Supporting internal customers on ecommerce projects and innovation.
Strong written and verbal communication skills required to respond effectively to internal stakeholders and regulatory agencies.
Provide regulatory guidance on ingredients and claims strategy to ensure they are accurately supported and properly described on labels and advertising.
Provide regulatory input to guide the business
Ability to access and research applicable regulations, horizon scanning of regulated consumer goods to assist with product proposition, labelling, regulatory strategy and claim support.
Provide training on label compliance and claims to R&D and Marketing associates.
Ability to manage multiple projects and think strategically to navigate the regulations
Support trade objectives of the business
Obtain and maintain necessary documentation for successful imports of pet food and ingredients, such as APHIS import permits, and provide support for affiliate markets, operations and commercial in obtaining export approvals.
Build regulatory understanding for imports and exports and remain current on World events which may have a direct impact in the agricultural industry specifically relating to pet food and ingredients (examples include BSE, Bioterrorism, Avian Flu).
Represent company objectives in pet food trade associations.
Potential to participate in trade association work groups and assure Mars strategies are incorporated into the objectives and actions.
Perform various other regulatory functions as needed.
