Digital -– Software Engineer Degree Apprenticeship - Secure Contracts

Location - Manchester

Start date – 7th September 2026

Salary - £23,810

You’ll be part of BT Digital, the area of BT Group that leads the digital transformation, focuses on modern technology - creating secure, reliable and innovative digital products for our customers.

Within BT Digital, Secure Contracts works with government and national security customers. We develop the secure platforms they rely on to protect the UK’s critical services and infrastructure.

As a Secure Contracts apprentice, you’ll learn on the job from industry experts and get involved in real projects from day one. You’ll help design, build and support secure platforms that put cloud technology, speed and safety first.

Your work will play a meaningful role in supporting the UK’s security and resilience, while giving you the skills and experience to build a strong career in digital and technology.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll collaborate with experts to learn how secure systems are designed, built and supported. Throughout the apprenticeship, you’ll rotate across different teams within Secure Contracts, giving you broad experience across the area. Depending on the contracts you work on, rotations may include:

  • Application Engineering

  • Infrastructure Engineering (including serverless architecture)

  • Project Management

You’ll work on real projects, developing your technical and professional skills while contributing to important, secure customer work.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

Your experience will vary depending on your rotation, but every placement gives you hands-on exposure to real projects while building your technical and professional skills. Typical activities include:

  • Work with industry professionals.
  • Management and delivery of Secure projects
  • Helping design, build and maintain both cloud and on-premise infrastructure.
  • Monitoring platform performance and assisting with troubleshooting.
  • Develop professional skills such as communication, problem-solving and teamwork, and much more!!

This is a multidisciplined apprenticeship, giving you the chance to explore different areas within Secure Contracts before specialising. Alongside your project work, you’ll attend university and study for a Level 6 Digital & Technology Solutions Professional (Software Engineering) degree. Your academic study makes up at least 20% of your working week, and completing the degree is required to retain the role.

Entry Requirements


We’re looking for applicants who match the entry requirements outlined.

  • 5 GCSE’s at grade 4-9 Including Maths and English or SCQF 5
  • 3 A Level’s –– grade BBC or SCQF Level 6 or 7
  • Must be eligible for and willing to undergo UK Government Security Clearance (Security Check - SC) due to the nature of the work. National security vetting: clearance levels - GOV.UK
