Job Description

Quantum is now, and it's built here.

Oxford Ionics, now part of IonQ, is pioneering the next generation of quantum computing. Using our world-leading trapped-ion technology, we're building the most powerful, accurate and reliable quantum systems to tackle problems that today's supercomputers cannot solve. Joining Oxford Ionics means becoming part of a global IonQ team that is transforming the future of quantum technology - faster, at scale, and with real world impact.

IonQ, Inc. [NYSE: IONQ] is the world's leading quantum company delivering solutions to solve the world's most complex problems. IonQ's newest generation quantum computers, IonQ Tempo and IonQ Forte Enterprise, are the latest in cutting-edge systems that have been helping customers and partners such as Amazon Web Services, AstraZeneca, and NVIDIA achieve 20x performance results. The company achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, setting a world record in quantum computing performance in 2025.

The company is accelerating its technology roadmap and intends to deliver the world's most powerful quantum computers with 2 million qubits by 2030 to accelerate innovation in drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense. IonQ's advancements in quantum networking position the company as a leader in building the quantum internet.

What to expect:

We are looking for a Director of Facilities to lead facilities operations across our growing Oxford campus. You will oversee the buildings, infrastructure, services and supplier relationships that support our critical manufacturing, data centre and laboratory environments, ensuring they remain safe, compliant, resilient and ready to support the development of world-leading trapped-ion quantum computers.

This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for complex building systems, vendor management, statutory compliance, space planning and facilities projects. The role will primarily focus on our Oxford site, with scope to support other UK sites and potentially other regional offices in Europe.

What you'll be responsible for:

You will lead the day-to-day and long-term operation of a technically complex site, working closely with stakeholders across Oxford Ionics and IonQ to make sure our facilities can support a fast moving, high growth business.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Overseeing critical site systems, including HVAC, MEP, electrical infrastructure, UPS, generators, chilled water and industrial gases

• Managing facilities vendors, service contracts, SLAs and supplier performance across hard and soft FM

• Ensuring compliance with UK statutory requirements, including HSE, fire safety, COSHH and planned maintenance obligations

• Leading local facilities teams and supporting space planning, landlord relationships, site reconfigurations and infrastructure-heavy fit-out projects

The role is expected to include some after-hours and on-call responsibilities, with oversight of the facilities team and vendor support for 24/7 site assistance. Estimated travel is 20-25%.

Requirements

You will bring significant facilities leadership experience in a technically complex environment, with strong working knowledge of hard FM, critical building systems, UK statutory compliance and supplier management.

You’d be a great fit with:

• 15-20 years of progressive experience in facilities management, property management or corporate real estate, including senior UK or multi-site leadership experience

• Strong technical knowledge across MEP, HVAC, electrical infrastructure, building services and planned maintenance

• Experience managing complex sites such as laboratories, R&D, manufacturing, data centres, critical infrastructure or similar environments

• Proven experience leading facilities teams, managing vendors and delivering infrastructure, relocation or fit-out projects

A relevant degree or professional qualification in facilities management, building surveying, engineering or a related field would be useful. IWFM, MRICS, R&D laboratory, cryogenics or CAD experience would also be beneficial.

Benefits

Be part of a team that’s shaping the future of quantum. We offer more than just a role, you’ll join a world class community of scientists, engineers and innovators working to unlock the full potential of quantum computing.

We offer a range of benefits, including opportunities to further your career alongside industry leaders, a competitive salary with IonQ stock options, an annual performance bonus, generous annual leave, flexible hybrid working, private medical and dental insurance for you and your family, and much more.

Join us and be part of the future of quantum computing.

We’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer and welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
