Principal Scientist Microbiology Global

The Principal Scientist Microbiology role defines and deploys the Mars Snacking microbiology strategy. Emphasis of the role will be in four key areas: Building microbiology capability; Providing microbiology governance; Providing microbiology expertise and Microbiology communication.

Microbiology capability – Defines and deploys the microbiology strategy and ensures that the strategy is supported by the right organization, populated with talented and competent associates, working with effective standards and underpinned by rigorous and future focused microbiology food safety science.

Microbiology governance – Ensures that any gaps in microbiological capability and performance are identified as part of a Continuous Improvement program. Work with relevant stakeholders to find solutions to fill gaps.

Microbiology expertise – Key source of internal microbiology expertise within the business. Primary internal interfaces for this role are within R&D, Supply, Corporate Affairs and Commercial at the global level within Mars Incorporated. Plays a key role in microbiological risk assessment as part of PRIMP for Serious and Critical food safety incidents.

Microbiology communication – Has a range of external networks and recognition to ensure up to date understanding of field of expertise: Is externally recognized as a significant force in microbiological research & development; networks with and influences legislators, scientific opinion-formers and research programs via active representation of the business on working parties and task forces in the microbiology area.

What are we looking for?

  • PhD in Microbiology or Food Science concentration in Microbiology.

  • Minimum of 3 years practical microbiology experience within food or beverage industry

  • Experience in low moisture food preferred

  • Experience defining and deploying microbiology strategy

  • Ability to work cross-functionally with a global perspective

What would your key responsibilities be:

  • Develop the segment microbiology strategy and assist with deployment in each global business units and regions

  • Leadership and management of the microbiology global practice group.

  • Develop global microbiology capability by coaching and mentoring microbiology experts.

  • Responsible for the co-development and implementation of corporate microbiology standards.

  • Provide global governance in segment microbiology strategy.

  • Provide microbiology expertise and risk assessments supporting PRIMP for Serious and Critical incidents.

  • Enable innovation pipeline by developing robust microbiological risk assessments and deployment strategies for new process technologies.

  • Ensures appropriate connected internally via the MSAC Food Safety Pod and with key external microbiology experts and opinion formers in industry, academia, regulatory and NGOs.

  • Identifies and addresses emerging external microbiology opportunities & threats.

The base pay range for this position at commencement of employment is between the range listed below, however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position will include variable pay, medical and dental benefits, participation in 401k plan, and paid time off benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an applicant receives an offer of employment.

The pay range shown is applicable to all US locations listed within the job posting:USD 134,400.00 - USD 184,800.00
