Job: Maintenance Planner / Scheduler - Days

Shift: Day

Location: Mars Petcare (Kansas, Mo)

The primary role of the maintenance planner/scheduler is to improve equipment reliability while minimizing conversion costs. These objectives are accomplished through sound planning practices, which include efficient utilization of labor, parts, materials, and outside vendor services. The planner/scheduler is responsible for the planning and scheduling of all maintenance activities performed in the area to which the planner/scheduler is assigned.

The planner/scheduler is a key contact and liaison person between the maintenance department and the plant departments served by maintenance. The planner/scheduler ensures the operations area to which they are assigned receives prompt, efficient, and quality service from the maintenance department. The planner/scheduler ensures the maintenance department is allowed to provide this service.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and assures work orders are correctly filled out
  • Work scope clearly described
  • Check if the priority and requested completion dates are realistic and provide reasonable lead-time
  • Charge numbers and other coding are complete and accurate
  • Discusses the details with the originator of the work order
  • Reviews with site engineering those work orders requiring engineering design.
  • Examines jobs to be done and determines the best way to accomplish the work. Consult with the requester, area manager, or maintenance manager when necessary.
  • Identifies and obtains necessary materials, work instructions, appropriate tools, etc. to execute the planned work order referring to manuals as needed.
  • Evaluate options to accomplish work to determine the least-cost alternatives.
  • The planner/scheduler should have complete knowledge of each department’s activities to schedule work orders effectively and efficiently in their area of responsibility.
  • Plans and schedules corrective, preventive, and predictive follow-up maintenance work in coordination with operations and maintenance leads.
  • If work is contracted to an outside vendor, the planner/scheduler assures the scope and cost of the work is clearly defined when appropriate, purchase orders are approved, and equipment will be available for the work performed. Additionally, the planner will assure the contractor personnel adhere to Mars contractor rules and regulations.
  • Analyses maintenance performance metrics such as accuracy of work plan estimates (time, labor, and materials), percent work orders awaiting scheduling, schedule compliance, overtime, contracted maintenance costs, and overdue work orders and returned work orders to improve work planning.
  • Reviews analysis and recommended corrective action with the Reliability Engineer.
  • Performs other tasks and individual assignments as requested.
  • Ensures all equipment design change proposals (corrective maintenance), Add/Delete/Modify work follows the Change Management Procedures.
  • Work executed is critiqued, and work plans are updated or revised as necessary.
  • Works with the storeroom to identify obsolete parts, off-quality parts, ideal in-stock numbers required delivery time of parts, parts kitting, etc.
  • The maintenance planner supports the development and accuracy of parts BOM for their functional area.
  • Assist as needed with Breakdown Analysis, problem-solving, and PM Optimization activities.

Education & Professional Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a two-year Associate Degree program in an electrical/mechanical career field or equivalent training/experience in a technical career field
  • 3+ years of manufacturing experience in a technical capacity in maintenance controls, electrical or mechanical. BS in engineering or sciences could be substituted for work experience.
  • Proficient in the maintenance module of SAP and purchasing system and should possess intermediate skill in the SAP storeroom work processes

Knowledge / Experience

  • A high level of planning and organizing skills is required to be proficient in the position.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Robust equipment and operational knowledge are necessary.
  • Have adequate craft knowledge to estimate labor hours and materials to visualize the job to be performed.
  • Able to read blueprints and schematics.
  • The planner/scheduler must react quickly to changes in requirements based on their understanding of priorities.
  • High-level interpersonal skills are required to negotiate and persuade.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to create sketches to clarify work order instructions.
  • Skills to conduct and facilitate meetings.
  • Ability to understand budgets, cost estimating, and value to the business
  • The maintenance planner should possess strong leadership skills with the ability to collaborate across the organization and be able to present information clearly and accurately.

Physical/Environmental Requirements:

  • Standing on a concrete floor.
  • Wearing proper personal protective equipment (hair net, bump cap, ear plugs, safety shoes, and uniform).
  • Bending, stooping, twist, turn, standing for extended time periods, reaching, climbing stairs, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
