Job Description
Develop Future Fuels for Shipping
At Maersk, we are accelerating the transition to low-emission shipping. This requires not only new fuels—but the capability to implement them safely, reliably, and at scale across a global fleet.
We are looking for a Fuel Transition Manager to take a leading role in turning alternative fuels from concept into daily operations.
This is a highly cross-functional role where you will work at the intersection of engineering, operations, safety, and supply, ensuring that new fuel solutions are practical, approved, and fully embedded onboard vessels.
Key Responsibilities
Enable Alternative Fuel Operations
Evaluate and mature fuel options (e.g. methanol, ethanol, biofuels and other alternative fuels blended into fossil fuel)
Define clear use cases and technical requirements for fleet deployment
Drive go/no-go decisions based on data, testing, and operational readiness
Lead Testing and Validation
Plan and execute end-to-end testing programmes from lab to vessel
Define success criteria and ensure structured, documented outcomes
Translate test results into clear operational and technical decisions
Vessel Approval Processes
Lead approvals across internal and external stakeholders (Fleet, Regulatory, Flag, Class, OEMs, authorities)
Develop and deliver robust technical documentation and safety cases
Drive Onboard Implementation
Prepare vessels for safe fuel introduction (systems, procedures, readiness)
Support initial bunkering and operations
Resolve technical challenges quickly to enable stable operations
Capture Learnings and Scale
Establish feedback loops from vessel operations
Convert experience into:
Updated procedures
Technical standards
Design improvements
Ensure solutions are scalable across the fleet
Shape Future Vessel Designs
Feed operational experience into newbuilding specifications
Collaborate with internal teams and yards to build fuel-flexible, future-ready vessels
Collaborate Across the Value Chain
Work closely with fuel suppliers, traders, and operators
Ensure that fuel solutions are not only viable—but available and executable in practice
What You Will Bring
We are open to a range of backgrounds. What matters is your strong technical aptitude, genuine interest in making things work and your ability to connect technical insight with operational execution
We are looking for someone who:
Drives progress and closes gaps in complex, cross-functional environments
Is comfortable making decisions with imperfect but structured data
Balances safety, compliance, and operational reality
Communicates clearly across technical and non-technical stakeholders
Is an excellent stakeholder manager as you will have a very wide reach internally in Maersk and externally.
Thrives in a space where standards are still evolving
Dare to challenge the standards and think outside of the box
Why This Role Matters
You will directly contribute to solving one of the most complex challenges in shipping: making alternative fuels work in real operations — not just on paper.
Your work will influence:
What and how fuels are used across a global fleet
How future vessels are designed
How the industry applies and evolves fuel standards
