About the role

  • Based in BT's Networks division within the Martini team, which delivers network performance monitoring and fault detection capabilities.
  • Directly impacts BT's network reliability by enabling Network Operations teams to detect and resolve faults faster, reducing customer-impacting outages.
  • Supports BT's operational excellence strategy by driving proactive network management and improving mean time to detect/repair.

What you’ll be doing

  • Design and build backend services using Java, applying multichannel architecture, data modelling, and integration patterns.
    Provide accurate development estimates based on high-level business and technical requirements.
  • Maintain clear and regular communication with stakeholders and customers throughout each project.
  • Work with databases including SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, and ClickHouse, as well as caching technologies like Redis, Memcached, and Varnish.
  • Perform root cause analysis on production issues and drive timely resolution.
  • Build tools and automation to reduce recurring errors and improve the experience for Network Operations users.
  • Lead and mentor backend developers through code reviews, pair programming, and setting engineering standards.
  • Shape system architecture when needed, ensuring solutions are scalable and maintainable.
  • Own and improve CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes to enable fast, reliable releases.

Essential Skills / Experience

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience in Java backend development.
  • Strong understanding of multichannel architecture, data modelling, data exchange, and system integrations.
  • Working knowledge of relational databases (SQL Server, Oracle, or MySQL) and caching technologies (Redis, Memcached, or Varnish).
  • Experience with ClickHouse or similar columnar databases.
  • Ability to provide accurate development estimates from high-level requirements.
  • Experience performing root cause analysis and resolving production issues.
  • Comfortable leading and mentoring developers through code reviews and engineering best practices.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.
  • Strong communication skills — able to keep stakeholders informed clearly and regularly.
  • Experience working in agile teams.

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Experience with containerisation using Kubernetes.
  • Experience with messaging systems such as Kafka.
  • Experience in the telecoms or network operations domain.
  • Exposure to network performance monitoring or fault detection systems.
