Product Manager - Identity
Job Description
Tesco's Identity platform is the authentication and access layer serving tens of millions of customer accounts across five markets — the backbone that lets every customer sign in, stay secure, and trust the systems behind every interaction with Tesco, in-store and online.
We're looking for a Product Manager to own strategy and roadmap for a core part of that platform's data foundations: the systems that master, structure, and serve the datasets underpinning identity at scale. This is a genuinely technical product role — you'll work daily with engineering on legacy-to-modern migrations, large-scale data system design, and the quality and reliability that tens of millions of customers depend on without ever thinking about it.
You'll be joining at a time of real technical evolution for the platform, modernising foundational systems, migrating away from legacy architecture, and building for scale and resilience as Tesco's identity data needs keep growing. So exciting times!
This role can be based from our London Farringdon or Welwyn Garden City office
- Strong exposure to APIs and enterprise systems — you understand how large, interconnected technical estates actually work
- A track record of building quality systems at scale, not just shipping features
- A technical orientation and fluency — comfortable holding your own in deep engineering conversations, without needing to be an engineer yourself
- Genuine curiosity for complex, ambiguous problems — the best candidates will be energised, not daunted, by systems complexity
- Experience with modernisation or migration projects — taking legacy systems to modern equivalents is a core part of this role
- Product management experience (2-3 years) working in an agile environment
- Understanding of technical debt and the ability to hold objective, credible conversations with engineering counterparts about prioritising it
- Excellent written and verbal communication — able to translate fluently between technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong decision-making and prioritisation skills, especially when trade-offs are real and decisions need to be made fast
- Good domain expertise in the relevant functional area/ a large complex domain
- Knowledge and experience of product management best practice and methodologies and strong technical acumen
- Technically competent to influence and understand the solution context and approach and aid engineering in estimating the complexity of work being requested
- Understands the impact Tech debt is causing and the value Tech upgrades can bring in, and can hold the objective conversations with your technology counterparts to prioritize it during any sprint
Skills Relevant for the role:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A methodical/ analytical approach and great problem-solving skills
- Attitude and the aptitude to learn new product area/domain quickly
- Great presentation and persuasion skills
- Team player who could work collaboratively with other members of the team
- Ownership, responsiveness and commitment towards assigned work
- Strong decision making and prioritization skills, especially when multiple trade-offs are involved and faster decision are required
- Expertise of Agile methodologies, writing effective user stories/ acceptance criterions
- Great people skills and can gain respect and trust of team members and others working with you
