Job Description

As The Head of Legal, Competition & Regulatory, you will be responsible for leading and managing the delivery of competition law advice across the entire Virgin Media O2 business, by using insight and influence to identify opportunities to improve or defend competitive position. You will ensure that the Executive Committee, Senior Leadership Team, and the rest of the business is provided with proactive expert advice on competition law issues affecting the company’s operations.

The Head of Legal will lead a team of 4 direct reports, and will motivate and support team members across the General Counsel’s Office and the wider business. Leading all aspects workflow, resource allocation and work prioritization, the role will ensure consistent, value improving business support as well as having the responsibility for developing standards and practices for the area.

The must haves

In order to be considered, you must have the following experience:

  • Demonstrable leadership skills and experience - track record in people and thought leadership, motivating team members, and actively promoting and elevating more junior team members as well as ability to lead through change.
  • Recognised expert in a broad range of competition law matters (behavioural and transactional) and consistent track record in providing strategic advice, with an understanding of the industry and key issues facing VMO2.
  • Ability to provide clear, credible commercially focused advice confidently and to influence and manage key relationships at all levels, including the highest levels of management.
  • Ability to manage external legal advisers, Counsel and economic experts and maintain relationships with regulators and governmental departments such as the CMA.
  • Ability to advise cross-functional teams, running multiple material matters at any one time working calmly and quickly under pressure; dealing with the unexpected whilst maintaining excellent service in “business as usual” matters.

The other stuff we are looking for

We'd also love you to bring;

  • Proven management of competition investigations (including market investigations, Competition Act investigations, State Aid matters) and merger control processes;
  • Previous experience supporting commercial teams with contractual negotiations and business conduct;
  • Experience of providing legal regulatory advice working with regulatory and policy professionals is also desirable
  • Experience in advising in relation to competition and regulatory litigation processes; and
  • Have a proven track record of designing and implementing competition law compliance programmes.
