Introduction:

This role will build support for the RSPB and inspire a world richer in nature through management and delivery of effective and inspiring communications and the management of reputational risk.

Day to day aspects of the role

  • The Communications Manager is responsible for proactively identifying, understanding, and managing issues that may give rise to reputational damage to the RSPB in the media, both over the long term and at little/no notice as unexpected issues emerge and ensuring that all relevant internal staff are informed and briefed about forthcoming and evolving media stories.
  • Manage the team of staff, providing clear targets, regular performance reviews and team development to enable them to support colleagues across the country.
  • Manage the development and delivery of the RSPB communications plan in Wales, and co-ordinate priorities and objectives for our work in liaison with UKHQ, to ensure it is on-brand, relevant to key country/region audiences and that we are deploying resources to maximise impact.
  • To lead in the development and nurturing of close relationships with a wide range of journalists, editors, producers, PR industry contacts and researchers working in the news and media, as well as other partnership organisations, ensuring that RSPB is recognised as a key deliverer of quality stories.
  • Lead on ensuring that all RSPB communications and communications products in Wales are created, delivered and/or written in a clear, compelling and on-brand style
  • Co-ordinate RSPB’s responses to media enquiries on a daily basis, guiding communications officers to provide timely quotes that are consistent with our official policy and, when required, represent the RSPB on air.
  • Provide communications guidance on all UK-wide and country priority political advocacy and campaigns so that they secure broad support that influences government policy.
  • Lead on the development and delivery of priority events in country/region (RSPB-led and external events with an RSPB presence), working with UKHQ Events Team and other teams to set and review clear objectives in support of our advocacy, engagement or wider growing support priorities.
  • Work with the Head of Communications and Marketing and the Head of Fundraising & Communications on the implementation of the RSPB’s Welsh Language Scheme to ensure all or communications and public facing products are created to a high standard, are relevant to a bilingual audience and generate greater support for the RSPB’s conservation mission amongst Welsh speaking communities.
  • Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of Wales’ media landscape.
  • Knowledge of how to achieve objectives using PR techniques and media campaigning.
  • Knowledge of current affairs and the mechanics of policy making and government in the devolved framework.
  • Excellent and creative verbal and written communication skills in English and Welsh.
  • Computer literacy in the full suite of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Able to communicate complex topics in a clear manner at all levels to reach shared understanding.
  • Project and management, including understanding of projects planning cycles, risk registers and monitoring and evaluation.
  • Team and people management, including ability to motivate and develop employees and volunteers.
  • Leadership skills, ability to think strategically and inspire others.
  • Negotiation, problem solving and influencing others, with an ability to resolve conflicting priorities and co-ordinate approaches across diverse teams.
  • Training and facilitation skills, including presentation skills and coaching on media skills for interviews, etc.
  • Managing an in-house media and communication team or PR agency team.
  • Managing projects across dispersed geographic areas.
  • Experience of delivering training and presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience of budget management.
  • Desirable qualifications, skills, knowledge and experience

  • PR, Media or other relevant qualification.
  • Working with the media, preferably at a country level.
  • Working in a busy press office or PR agency.
  • Event management.
  • Visitor experience.
  • Destination marketing.
  • Working with volunteers.
