Job Description

Grade: Co-ordinator 1a
Salary: £52,446 – £58,487 per annum
Contract: Permanent, 42 hours per week
Location: Leeds (on site)
Reports to: Area Lead CTM, West & North Yorkshire

At the centre of every great journey are the people who make it happen. As a Traincrew Co-ordinator at Leeds, you’ll play a vital role in keeping our services moving – leading and supporting the team who make sure our drivers and conductors are where they need to be, when they need to be there.

This role is about leadership, coordination and communication. You’ll be the link between our Traincrew Co-ordinators, Depot Managers, Control, and Operations colleagues, helping to keep the service on track across Leeds, Huddersfield, Harrogate and Skipton.

What you’ll be doing

Each day brings something new – from managing rosters and resourcing to responding to real-time service challenges. You’ll:

  • Coordinate traincrew coverage across multiple depots, ensuring services are fully staffed and disruption is minimised.
  • Work closely with Operations Control and Depot Managers to respond quickly and effectively to shortages or incidents.
  • Produce and present operational data and insights to support decision-making in management meetings.
  • Manage rostering issues and updates through systems such as IRMA and IVOR, ensuring accuracy for pay and planning.
  • Investigate and respond to delays, including managing communication with traincrew and relevant teams.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports and correspondence, and ensure effective communication across all operational areas.
  • Mentor colleagues and promote a culture of collaboration, safety and high performance.

This is a fast-paced, hands-on role where every decision you make helps keep the railway running smoothly for thousands of passengers each day.

About you

You’ll be a calm and confident decision-maker, comfortable working in a busy environment where no two days are the same. You’ll have experience in operational or resource management, ideally within the rail industry, and you’ll know how to bring people together to solve problems.

You’ll also bring:

  • Strong knowledge of traincrew rostering and conditions of service.
  • Experience with operational systems such as IRMA, IVOR, Bugle and other rail performance tools.
  • A good understanding of PPM (Public Performance Measure) and operational performance metrics.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills – you’ll be confident motivating, guiding and supporting colleagues at all levels.
  • The ability to think clearly under pressure, stay organised, and make sound, logical decisions quickly.

If you’re a natural organiser who enjoys leading from the front and working as part of a close-knit team, this could be the opportunity for you.

Why Northern?

We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North – connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe – and this year, we’re celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.

At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B – we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.

No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
