The WALTHAM Petcare Science Institute is Mars Petcare's pet research centre. Our work focuses on the healthcare, nutritional and behavioural needs of pets. The science we deliver supports development of innovative products and services to enable the business to deliver against our Purpose: A BETTER WORLD FOR PETS™.

This role is responsible for devising and delivering a diverse research portfolio, encompassing and integrating multiple health and wellbeing scientific disciplines: from biomarker and diagnostic discovery, behaviour, data science, sensory science, biobanking and ‘omics. The research within this portfolio will focus on key strategic initiatives, and may be conducted within WALTHAM, in collaboration with clinical colleagues in Mars Veterinary Health, and with external partners across academia or industry.

The role holder is accountable for the delivery of scientific knowledge and intellectual property, as well as ensuring that the research portfolio provides timely, translatable solutions to meet the changing needs of the business. They must have an ability to create a clear and compelling scientific vision focusing on emerging large-scale data-driven approaches like the MARS PETCARE BIOBANK™ . They will proactively provide scientific advice, direction and leadership by utilizing their own technical expertise, the expertise within their research team, internal partners and external consultants. They are expected to have an extensive network of resources and an ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with a variety of stakeholders. This will require technical expertise, to ensure that the potential and implications of research trends are fully understood and implemented, and excellent communication and organizational skills to ensure that this knowledge is effectively translated and deployed to across global business.

The role holder must inspire associates; and bring to life support and enthusiasm for the vision with a clear map and milestones to achieve it. They must have a passion for people leadership, coaching and inspiring a team with a strong focus on the development of diverse talent. The job holder will be an integral part of a small team of senior research managers who are collectively responsible to delivering WALTHAM's research program. They will be expected to build and maintain strong collaborative relationships within that team to drive integration and synergy.

The role holder will be primarily based at the WALTHAM Petcare Science Institute, but the role is global in its outreach and will involve substantial international networking and some travel.

What are we looking for?

  • Significant scientific leadership within an academic, pharmaceutical, veterinary, or human healthcare industry.

  • A proven record in leading, developing and delivering a high-quality research program in a field relevant to human or animal health and wellbeing.

  • Expertise and knowledge of emerging large-scale data-driven approaches, demonstrated by a substantial publication record.

  • An ability to inform and inspire both expert and non-technical audiences with complex science, verbally and through written materials.

  • An established network in the scientific community and experience of building and leading successful multi-disciplinary research collaborations.

  • Experience of excellence in line management with exceptional people skills.

What will your key responsibilities be?

  • Defines, manages, and oversees execution of high quality, multi-disciplinary, experimental research spanning pet health and wellbeing science.

  • Continually improves the calibre and capability of science at the WALTHAM Petcare Science Institute through inspirational leadership, performance assessment, talent development and excellent in recruitment.

  • Ensures proprietary knowledge and value is generated from research and that it is made available across the Petcare divisions, and that stakeholder needs are met through relevant research.

  • Provides broad technical leadership across multi-disciplinary science, focusing on emerging large-scale data-driven approaches; communicates these effectively to engage a range of stakeholders.

  • Accountable for budget & resource planning, tracking and management of research.
