We have a fixed-term role in the Regional Mars Wrigley Q&FS team, based in Slough R&D Head Office, in the position of Inbound Raw Materials Technologist. The role reports direct to the Regional QMP & Food Safety Manager and will be responsible, as part of a team, to ensure Inbound verification analysis is executed for Gum & Fruity Confections raw materials, in line with Mars Wrigley Material Quality Management (MQM) requirements. The role will coordinate and execute inbound verification analysis for all Gum & Fruity confection raw materials from Mars Suppliers based within the Mars Wrigley European region.
Job Description:
The purpose of this role is to execute the Regional Inbound Verification Testing (IVT) Raw Material program for Mars Wrigley Gum & Fruity confection raw material suppliers. The MARS Material Quality Management (MQM) system requires a risk-based approach to raw material inbound verification which includes pre-shipment and on-site material samples to be taken and sent for analysis in accordance with the MARS Supplier Specification.
This role will ensure that all Mars Wrigley Gum & Fruity confection materials which carry a Medium to High-risk profile are being analyzed for quality and food safety parameters in accordance with the latest Regional Mars Wrigley MQM frequency and requirements.
The role is responsible for the operational execution of the Mars Wrigley Gum & Fruity confection IVT program, which includes liaising with MARS-approved external laboratories and MARS suppliers, whilst tracking and governance the program.
The geographical scope of this role includes all European based Mars Wrigley (Gum & Fruity Confections) Raw Material Suppliers who supply MARS Wrigley factories Globally. The Inbound Raw Materials Technologist will be capable and comfortable working autonomously, whilst with support and guidance from the Raw Materials Inbound Co-Ordinator.
What are we looking for?
Qualifications & Skills
Minimum BSc Food Science, Chemistry, Microbiology, or equivalent
Laboratory work experience (or working with food-related laboratory analysis/methods) is recommended for the role.
At least 3 years’ experience working in a Quality & Food safety role for a Food FMCG business
Experience working with Raw Materials (e.g. risk assessments, technical assessments or specifications) in the food industry (preferable)
Good verbal and written communication skills in English
Able to stand alone, with strong collaboration competency.
Experience
Responsible for execution of the Mars Wrigley Europe Inbound verification analytical testing program (according to MQM standard) for Food Safety and Quality parameters of high and medium Gum & Fruity Confections raw materials produced in European-based MARS suppliers.
Arranges laboratory analytical testing with MARS suppliers and external labs.
Analyses all results and flags any out-of-spec results to key stakeholders; e.g. Supplier Quality Assurance (SQA) technologists, Material Planners and Q&FS managers.
Maintains and Updates the Gum & Fruity confections raw material IVT master file; which includes testing requirements based on changes to supplier status (provided by SQA), material risk status and projected batch deliveries throughout the year. Attends regular meetings with SQA to ensure the master file is always kept up to date.
Develops and updates the IVT database to trend results. Advises Regional SQA and Regional Q&FS stakeholders of any developing trends.
Ensures external labs are using the correct testing methods, in accordance with Raw Material Specifications and MRAs.
Process laboratory IVT invoices to ensure correct payment for IVT analytical services. Tracks costs of all associated testing vs. the allocated budget, reporting updates to the Raw Materials Inbound Co-Ordinator.
Liaise with suppliers and Mars Wrigley factories to send, track & trace material samples and ensure prompt external lab processing. Deals with any analytical queries or delays and ensures that new samples are sent if required.
Confirms with external lab when results will be ready and advises planning teams. If there are delays then escalate when necessary.
What will be your key responsibilities?
Manage and update regional, standardized Material Risk Assessments (MRAs) and Packaging Risk Assessments (PRAs) in conjunction with cross-functional teams to ensure MARS Material Quality Management compliance.
Manage MRA/PRA tracking and reporting, whilst providing input and support for Continuous Improvement related to Material Compliance and systems Development.
Administering and maintaining Raw Material and Packaging Material Specifications for existing MARS materials in the designated MARS specification system and working cross-functionally to ensure compliance.
Review of MRA/PRAs, Specifications and Inspection Plans according to MARS MQM/PQM Standard and Change Management guidelines. Working with other
Provide input and support for Continuous Improvement related to Material Compliance and systems Development, to further increase efficiency and reduce business risk.
