We are currently seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer is to undertake Engineering and technical tasks of advanced scope and complexity, working with other business leaders to share knowledge and advance the business. The Principal Engineer will act as a work winning consultant, Project Manager and, lead project teams to deliver successful projects and to maintain our brand reputation for superior quality technical work with a high customer focus.

In this role you will be:

  • Performs professional technical work involving considerable independence in approach, and a high degree of originality, ingenuity and judgement.
  • Serves as a technical specialist for the organisation in the application of advanced concepts, principles and methods in an assigned area.
  • Act as a work winning champion of new or existing clients including key account management, developing bids and proposals and liaising with BMT Program Managers.
  • Gives technical advice to management and business units and directs or advises on use of equipment or material.
  • Supervises and reviews the work of Engineers designers/drafters, and technicians.
  • Shares knowledge and acts as mentor within area of expertise or across the business.
  • Adheres to, and actively promotes, quality, safety and environmental procedures/standards.
  • Liaises with clients, potential and current, for the purposes of service delivery, networking and business development.
  • Contributes to thought leadership activities through their work and/or by authoring papers and presenting at events, seminars and conferences.
  • May act as Project Manager on a range of projects, managing projects to scope and within time, cost and quality requirements.

Specific tasks may include:

o Review and audit of the design of machinery and associated structures and components.
o Concept and detailed design of machinery and associated structures and components.
o Testing, Measurement and Stress analysis of machines, machine components and machine structures, using various techniques including Space Gass, Finite element modelling, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and Discrete Element Modelling (DEM).
o Failure and fatigue analysis involving machines and structural components.
o Develop and maintain specialist software including SolidWorks, Ansys and the like.
o Preparation of reports, manuals, drawings and documentation.
o Promotion of the capabilities of the company to clients and fellow BMT employees.
o Perform and lead inspection of machinery including mining and ports related equipment.

Relevant Education, Experience, and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or other relevant area of study.
  • Minimum 15 years’ experience post-graduation.
  • Relevant registration with recognised engineering/environmental body, preferably with CPEng, RPEQ & RPEV (or ability to obtain).
  • Demonstrated experience in sales and business development.
  • Have an existing customer network or previous experience in developing key customer relationships.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organisation skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrates initiative and takes a proactive approach to tasks.
  • Client focused and commercially aware.
  • Results orientated.
  • Experience working within a multi-site organisation.
  • Experience working within the engineering or resources sector.

Preferred experience with machinery such as stackers, reclaimers, excavators, minerals processing plant, mobile mining machinery, underground mining, draglines, belt conveyors, rolling stock, ship loaders, port machinery, cranes etc.
