Job title: Senior Engineer – Ship structures (FEA)

Location: Scotstoun, Glasgow. We offer a range of hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

Salary: Up to £ 51,000 (depending on skills and experience)

What you’ll be doing:

  • Construct and refine Finite Element Models from 2D/3D drawings, geometry and existing FE models
  • Undertake FEA of significant ship sections and apply multiple load cases in accordance with project guidelines
  • Employ local sub-modelling techniques to assess critical areas of ship structure as required
  • Produce other structural design solutions, supported by calculations, for either ship scantling issues or seat designs as required
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams within Naval Ships to deliver engineering solutions
  • Development of high quality technical reports to communicate results to internal and external stakeholders
  • Peer reviewing of other team members calculations where required
  • Prepare Design Sketches of structural solutions as required

Your skills and experiences:

Essential:

  • Well versed in the complete FEA cycle; building models, verification, quality assurance
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • IT knowledge with strong communication skills both verbal and written, particularly in regards to technical report writing capabilities

Desirable:

  • Experience with Altair’s Hyperworks suit and Abaqus
  • Good understanding and experience of employing FEA to Ship structures, in both global and local scenarios
  • Experience working in ship building

Engineers at all levels should possess an academic qualification in Engineering or other related STEM subjects as well as specific (either academic or professional) qualifications and become recognised as Incorporated or Chartered Engineers through an appropriate recognised professional institution. Engineers are encouraged, and will be supported, to achieve the relevant accreditation.

Preference will be given to candidates who are already professionally registered.

The BAE Systems Structures Team:

The BAE Systems Structures Team is at the heart of the Engineering discipline. We ensure the strength, durability, and performance of some of the world’s most advanced naval vessels are fit for the important challenges they will face during their life cycle. We tackle complex structural challenges, from concept design to in-service support, using cutting-edge Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Lloyd’s Register standards. Our work spans everything from hand calculations, to full ship assessments as well as high fidelity local models.
