In this role
The Realtime team owns the core backend that underpins Ably’s entire edge messaging platform. This role is a unique opportunity to have a major impact in a fast growing company and to work on planet-scale infrastructure.

Day to day, you will
- Collaborate with other engineers to solve interesting and challenging problems
- Contribute to the delivery of key functionality or help scale and evolve our platform or move the needle on performance
- Design, develop, deploy and optimise backend services with a focus on low latency, high availability and scalability
- Lead cross-functional projects and drive initiatives
- Work in an environment that supports your individual growth and encourages innovation
We'd love to hear from you if
- You have extensive experience developing back-end services at scale, including experience with concurrency, distributed systems and low latency throughput
- You have experience working with or building messaging queues and/or pub/sub systems at scale
- You have extensive experience programming in a high-level server-side language like Go, Node.js, Java, C++, or Python
- You are an experienced technical leader who has led teams in the successful delivery of major features
- You enjoy contributing back to Open Source communities
- You have the ability to self-start and you embrace a growth mindset
- You invest in the growth of your team and are eager to share knowledge and mentor others
- You are an effective communicator and an excellent teammate
