Who we are:

At TrueLayer, we’re building a global open banking platform that’s changing how money moves and so much more. We make payments and refunds instant, account data accessible and verification seamless — all so innovators in every industry can build better financial experiences for their users.

To date, we’ve raised $270 million from world-renowned investors including Stripe, Tiger Global, Addition and Tencent. We’ve got offices in London, Milan, Dublin and Sydney. And we’re trusted by industry leaders like Revolut, Cazoo and Trading 212… though we’re not stopping here.

Our vision is a financial system that works for everyone. To make that happen, we’re creating original and innovative products that will remove the friction from finance for good. We’re seriously scaling our infrastructure, we’re entering new territories all the time, we’re cornering a whole new category — and we’d like your help to get us there.

Head of Legal

TrueLayer’s Legal team does two things:

  • we support and enable fast commercial and corporate growth and new product development;

  • We handle the risks and overcome the issues that are inherent in building a market-leading global fintech at pace.

It is complex and rewarding work as we launch new products, expand into new markets, and onboard and service some of the biggest and most innovative companies in the world.

We are looking for an exceptional lawyer and leader to join as Head of Legal, to oversee the Legal function in the UK and to support the General Counsel on global and strategic projects. You should be a proven leader who can think big and shape a high-performance function that will support the business at scale. You should be an open and compassionate manager with a proven history of developing junior lawyers. You will need to be accountable, show initiative, and be an great communicator with internal and external stakeholders.

You will be joining TrueLayer at a very exciting time. You will work on new products and support us to enter new markets. In return, we will provide you with significant opportunities for personal and professional development in a fun and inclusive environment.

As our Head of Legal, you will:

  • Direct the Legal function in the UK, reporting into the General Counsel;

  • Join a wider departmental leadership team alongside heads of finance, strategy, risk, operations and compliance;

  • Supervise a team of lawyers in the UK, and support and develop those team members as well as other lawyers around the world as we grow;

  • Develop new legal initiatives and operating processes with the existing team that focus on supporting the business as it scales;

  • Take responsibility for ensuring that the team has the budget, headcount, and bandwidth to implement those initiatives;

  • Coordinate on new product reviews with the support of your legal team and the wider risk and compliance function;

  • Alongside our Policy and Compliance teams, provide thought leadership on regulatory issues that affect our business;

  • Direct on major commercial deals including strategic partnerships and big ticket client contracts, and provide senior support on the day-to-day commercial dealflow;

  • Provide expertise across a range of other areas where legal advice is required (e.g. data strategies, HR/employment and corporate affairs);

  • Alongside our Risk function, provide strategic advice on TrueLayer’s risk appetite, and advise the leadership team on regulatory affairs and corporate governance;

  • Handle and facilitate relationships with key stakeholders throughout a global organisation;

  • Partner with the leadership team to have an impact on the legal culture and risk appetite of TrueLayer.

What we need you to have done:

  • Significant experience as a practising solicitor, including time spent in-house at a Financial Technology company or a regulated Technology company, for example with experience through a hyper-growth stage;

  • Experience supervising and guiding an in-house legal team;

  • A high-quality understanding of financial services regulation and, ideally, the UK/EU payments landscape;

  • Experience providing pragmatic legal advice to commercial and product teams.

What we need you to be:

  • Results-oriented: you show initiative, you care about the bigger picture, you focus on outcomes and get stuff done, you work on what matters and delegate or automate the rest;

  • Risk aware: you are comfortable taking risk-based decisions, you think about our customers and our reputation not just the rules and regulations, you are comfortable working in grey areas and you have solid ethics to lean on during those times;

  • Agile: you don’t stay in your lane, you appreciate working on new things and stepping out of your comfort zone;

  • Team First: you guide your team by example, you are humble about your role in the business, you see your job as supporting the company to move forward quickly and safely;

  • Future thinking: you are enthusiastic about growing teams and maintaining culture during growth, you take responsibility for your own professional development and continuous learning;

  • Caring: you build trusting relationships with colleagues, you create an environment where people challenge each other safely, you give frequent, timely, specific and actionable feedback;

  • Accountable: you are a confident decision-maker, you establish clear escalation routes within your team, you don’t hide behind legal jargon;

  • Trusted: you build trust by demonstrating the highest standards of performance, you show meticulous attention to detail, sound judgement, and efficient subject matter expertise in legal and regulatory issues.

What you can expect from us:

  • Competitive salary and meaningful equity in the company
  • Flexible hours and hybrid working — work from home and our incredible offices in London Milan Sydney and Dublin
  • A remote-working budget to help set up your home office
  • Flexible holiday policy, with 24 days as standard

  • £500 per quarter (outside of required business travel) to visit our hub cities around the world
