Job Description

Founded in 2017 by our CEO, James, and co-founder, Callum, we’re an award-winning technology startup with a mission to make driving fairer and we think it’s time that car insurance was done differently for low mileage drivers. With the UK’s first real-time pay-by-mile car insurance policy, we’re bringing the same level of on-demand convenience to car ownership that people now expect from taxis and take-away food.

We’re now looking for a Head of Data to support our growth and help us make better data-driven decisions, using data as an asset to drive competitive advantage.

As our pay-by-mile policy was the first of its kind, our policy has proven popular with UK motorists, who have voted us Best Car Insurance Provider three times, and Best Insurance App for two years running at the Insurance Choice Awards. Our customer-first approach has also ensured we have a Trustpilot rating of ‘Excellent’. We’ve been covered by the BBC, The Telegraph and TechCrunch, while our pay-by-mile policy has also been featured on TV’s Sky News and The Gadget Show.

The Role

Reporting to our VP of Engineering, the Head of Data will be responsible for our Data strategy and roadmap, building out the data function at By Miles. You’re a strategic thinker, with the ability to set, effectively communicate vision and link to execution whilst being comfortable getting hands on the tools to supercharge delivery.

It’s a really exciting time to join By Miles (we know they all say that, but we actually mean it - we’ve doubled in size within a year and expect to continue expanding quickly). This is a new role in our Senior Management Team to help fuel our growth ambitions in 2022 and beyond. You’ll be instrumental in helping us shape the future of our Data Team and contribute to our wider strategy by:

  • Taking on the responsibilities for budget, people management, vision/mission, strategy and roadmap of our Data Team (Data Engineers and Business Intelligence Analysts), building a data function in By Miles that we are proud of.

  • Enabling all departments to be data driven and efficient in their decision making.

  • Enabling us to stay ahead of our competition, through proactively addressing the continued growth of our data sources, increasing diversity of data use cases, and users.

We’re looking for someone to join our team with:

  • The ability to clearly articulate and implement the right data ownership and architecture approach.

  • The confidence to make architectural and buy vs build decisions.

  • A good understanding of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Data and Analytics services, their strengths, weaknesses, industry trends and competitors.

  • The ability to get hands on the tools to super charge delivery.

  • Excellent proactive communication skills - intra and inter teams, with proven experience influencing to gain buy-in from peers and stakeholders.

  • A highly analytical mindset that allows you to derive valuable, actionable insights and business decisions.

  • Customer focused experience and ability to use data to underpin customer experience improvements.

  • A strategic mindset, with the ability to set, effectively communicate vision and link to execution.

You’ll be a fantastic addition to By Miles if you have:

  • Experience in using data within consumer-facing businesses. You’ve done this in the real world and can demonstrate the impact they have had.

  • A hands on data engineering or architectural background so You’re equipped to support and develop the team and not afraid to get stuck in.

  • A strong understanding of data pipeline, build and deployment of machine learning models.

  • Experience providing business intelligence on customer interactions in order to lead key business decisions on improving conversion, retention and satisfaction.

  • Experience providing insightful metrics across journeys and processes, and deep insights to make key decisions.

  • Extensive experience leading the development of data solutions for complex systems (we use Amazon Web Services (AWS), ensuring data structures and technical solutions are consistent with the specified requirements and built to scale.

  • Experience developing, executing and tracking against a data vision and strategy.

  • Experience mentoring others. You know what it takes to support the growth of data specialists, engineers, analysts and/or scientists.

  • Experience managing a small team of people.

  • The ability to propose tools and improvements based on robust Return on Investment (RoI) calculations to inform build vs buy tool and platform decision making.

  • Experience supporting organisations through customer and data volume scaling.

If you have some of the below, it's an added bonus, but not essential!

  • Experience in operating within a regulated environment such as insurance.

  • Any experience working with event-driven architectures.

Salary: Competitive
