Employment type
Full time

In 2018, we launched the UK’s first real-time pay-by-mile car insurance policy, and we’ve been growing quickly ever since. We’re looking for a creative and energetic UX Writer to work across our cross-functional teams, improving the end-to-end experience at By Miles, from the moment drivers first get a quote through to using our member app. You’ll be helping us to iterate on how we explain our unique pricing model and communicate a friendlier, faster, more straightforward and jargon-free car insurance experience.

As our pay-by-mile policy was the first of its kind, our policy has proven popular with UK motorists, who have voted us Best Car Insurance Provider three times, and Best Insurance App for two years running at the Insurance Choice Awards. Our customer-first approach has also ensured we have a Trustpilot rating of ‘Excellent’. We’ve been covered by the BBC, The Telegraph and TechCrunch, while our pay-by-mile policy has also been featured on TV’s Sky News and The Gadget Show.

The role

This is a new role at By Miles and you will be joining our creative team, working across our cross-functional product teams. Reporting into the Head of Brand & Experience, you’ll be working closely and collaborating with product managers, product designers and engineers on a daily basis, championing the power of the written word to make experiences better.

You will also work independently researching, planning, documenting, testing and iterating UX flows, as well as writing all customer and member-facing UX copy. You’ll also contribute copy for the tools our Customer Experience team uses, supporting them in having great conversations that matter. You'll regularly collaborate with other writers and designers in the brand team to support marketing initiatives, as well as all service-based emails and notifications. As somebody who values growth and improvement, you’ll work to establish new processes and develop existing ones to make our collaboration between writers, designers and engineers more effective.

We would love someone with the following skills and experience to join our team:

Skills and attitude:

  • You’re a skilful writer, who is able to communicate complex messages clearly and concisely and inject personality and charm into even the smallest microcopy.
  • You have a keen eye for detail, with spelling/grammar expertise and experience in proofreading other people’s work.
  • You’re able to interpret and follow our existing tone of voice guidelines, as well as build on and maintain them for UX.
  • You’re user-focused and highly collaborative, and you’re able to build close working relationships with a range of different people and personality types.
  • You’re a strategic thinker, who can be creative and analytical at the same time.

We’d like to meet someone who’s:

  • Written content for websites, emails and smartphone apps - or maybe you’ve created content for something we haven't even heard of. Whatever your writing journey is so far, you’ve got an exciting portfolio to show it.
  • Comfortable with flowcharting, mapping out user flows, and using data to guide your decisions.
  • Equipped with a good working knowledge of qualitative and quantitative user research techniques, carrying out competitor analysis, writing customer surveys and creating customer personas.
  • Familiar with UX best practices, passionate about writing, usability, accessibility and human-centered design.

And if you have some of the below, it's an added bonus, but not essential!

  • You’ll have some basic proficiency in using any design programmes from Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign primarily) and/or Sketch/Figma.
  • You have experience in designing and conducting user research workshops.
  • Have had any exposure (however limited) to coding, HTML or front-end development.
  • Worked in the fintech industry/startup world before.
  • Able to carry out quantitative data analysis to uncover and validate customer insights
